I did get you a copy of the Bret Hart set however, and it was way better than the Superstar set.

just got the AWA DVD set, and really enjoyed the doc, even though there are some weird versions of history going on between both AWA and wwf camps.
i mean, i went to the last two months of Road Warrior cards in Denver (the one where Hayes mentions they are leaving for Texas) and those were packed houses. the LOD was barely mentioned at all, except by Hayes. so i don't think the AWA was "on it's last legs" after Hogan left, that's for sure.
overall, though, i sure did enjoy the doc, and am becoming a bigger Bockwinkel fan each time i see and hear him talk.

Yeah the history was a tad off on the documentary, but it was still damn good. I didn't like Nick when I was a kid, but as an older more mature fan I realize how truly great he was. He was smooth in the ring and on the mic, and I feel he doesn't get his due as one of the true legends. The AWA letting Hogan leave was the beginning of their demise though. They still drew good houses for awhile but a couple things hastened the end:
1)A mass talent exodus to the WWF and NWA. They lost so many top name guys to the competition. The Road Warriors, Freebirds, Ric Martel, Dino Bravo, Baron Von Rashke, The Rockers, Jim Brunzell, The Vachons, Tito Santana, Curt Hennig, Sgt. Slaughter, and so many more went on to star elsewhere.
2)Devaluing their World Title. They awarded it to Bockwinkel after Verne retired. They awarded it to Nick when they stripped Hansen. They stripped Jerry Lawler and then filled it in a freakin Battle Royal. It made them look bush league by doing it the way they did.
3)Keeping the old guys on top way too long. Verne was the man in the AWA way longer than he should have. They kept the Vachons, The Crusher, Baron, and so many more when they were way past their primes. Nick was the only one who seemed to age gracefully as his series with Hennig shows. I am not saying they shouldn't have been used, but not as main eventers or Champions. It was hard to believe when you had shriveled up old guys beating guys half their age.

The 4 Horseman DVD is absolutely awesome. It seems that as more and more time goes on get better histroical accuracy on these WWE made DVDs. This really focused on the first version and touched on all other versions. If you watched JCP during that era this is a must have. Friggin great as hell! Wanna borrow it Dave?

Hogan: that was fun- more interesting to see the early stuff i hadn't- bloodying Andre and some of the two man jobber matches. most of it was fun to watch again though, especially the crowd turning on the Rock like they did.
Piper: i really enjoyed the doc, but most of his matches don't interest me at all, for whatever reason. you could tell he was gonna go face by WMII, since the crowd was cheering for him.
Pillman: great doc, just have NO interest in him as a performer. never saw the appeal. seemed like a good guy overall. liked him as a heel more than a face.
Four Horseman: another good doc, though no Ole or Lugar interviews (i know why). they did leave out Arn from being part of the LOD, or his face/jobber run in Georgia. glad they talked to Tully and Barry though.
Ric was right, with all the talent the NWA/WCW had, they should have buried Vince. they blew it completely. they missed a sure fire feud with Doc and Flair, or Doc and just about ANY NWA mainstay. that Wargames was fun to watch. where were the Road Warriors when that Wargames was going on? it was odd to see Paul in there with the others.
thanks again Chad, i'll get them back to you soon!

WWE actually contacted both for the documentary. Ole turned it down because way back when the WWF took Georgia's slot on TBS Ole vowed never to work for Vince and on sheer principal refused it as doing it meant he was a hypocrite. Ole may come off as a bitter old kook but you have to respect his sticking to his guns. I don't know why Lex declined their offer though.
It is a shame that they didn't feature more of Pillman's early WCW stuff as if they did I think you would enjoy him more than his later work.

well, i can respect Ole for his principles, that's for sure. not many people have NOT worked for wwf after WCW has fallen. thanks again for all these great things. i'll be sending them back soon, along with some fun extras.

The Ladders DVD set is pretty good. They had a match from 1979 from Stampede between Jake Roberts and a pre-JYD Big Daddy Ritter. They have the first three TLC matches between the Hardys, Dudleyz, and Edge&Christian. Those were some wicked matches and it amzes me that they did not kill each other. They have the second ladder match between Razor Ramon and HBK. The first one from Wrestlemania X has been released before and I like the fact they resisted the urge to include it and instead put the rematch which while not as revered is just as classic. They also have the first Money in the Bank match. They even have the four way match where Joey Mercury got his face shattered. They even included a ladder match from WCW. That is my only gripe about the set. Aside from the one Stampede match and the lone WCW one they didn't make good use of their vast library. There were some good ladder matches in ECW and a couple more good ones from WCW they could have used. The set lets you see how the ladder matches progressed from the archaic one in Stampede and the tame ones when the WWE started using them to the holy smeg spectacles they became.

i've been less and less interested in these newer releases, though i would like to see the ladders matches.

Would you like to borrow the Ladders and World Class sets? I like the Raw 15th anniversary set. The bonus disc I got for Crystal buying it at Walmart is the very first episode of Raw. Let me know if you want to borrow them Megs. At some point I would like to get the HBK set, but I already have the first Rey Misterio set and I don't feel inclined to get the new one. I like John Cena but not to the point of buying his set. I am looking forward to the Stone Cold and Rock sets that are supposed to be coming out this year. I will wait to see what matches they put on the best of Starrcade set they are doing before I make up my mind on it.
I have told Crystal at some point I would love to get the Wrestlemania and Royal Rumble box sets.

Crystal got me the new Austin set. To be honest the Stone Cold Truth set was better. One thing I did like was that they avoided repeating matches on the DVDs. If you want an inclusive synopsis of his career you need both sets. Luckily I have both. I actually like the fact that WWE seems to be avoiding putting out DVDs and then a couple of years later slapping new box art on it. The set is good, don't get me wrong, but this and the Stone Cold Truth go together. If you aren't a die hard fan enough to realize there is another set things like his first WWF Title win and the infamous IC Match against Owen where his neck was ruined will seem like stark omissions. They do show clips from the matches, but not the whole match.
Megs I have Before They Were Stars 2 and Wrestlemania 3 for you.

Well my anniversary isn't until September but my Wife already got me the biggest part of it. For the price of just the Wrsetlemania Anthology I got the WM set, the Royal Rumble Anthology and I also got The first One Night Stand, Wrestlemanias 21&22, Rise and Fall of ECW, and Dusty's set. The price was why she got it for me now. It will be our 10th Anniversary this year. Part of me feels bad but damnit I have done without for so long it has been nice to get some of the things I really wanted. Our kids never ever did without, but Crystal and I did, that is what Parents do. Yeah I spent over $200, but just the entire Wrestlemania or Royal Rumble Anthologies go for that. Throw in those extra discs and the price was certainly right. Plus this is the majority of my Anniversary gift so I won't beat myself up about it, and I will just enjoy the hell out of it.
Megs you are getting the Rise and Fall of ECW. You'll see why the original ECW was so good. You already have the Dusty set right?

The new HBK set is pretty fair. They seem to be getting better with these documentaries. HBK was very candid and forthcoming with his past issues. The match selection is really pretty good. Once again they seemed to try and offer different matches than they previously released. I don't have the from the Vault set they put out on him a couple of years back, but this one is pretty good. I think they need to quit doing DVD releases on the same guy over and over.

My Mom shocked me as she picked me up the new Triple H set. It isn't one I'd have gotten for myself, but it wasn't that bad. I was shocked as Triple H mentioned Benoit and they showed him when he discussed tearing his quad. It was okay, the doc was nothing special but it wasn't bad either. They had already released two other Triple H sets. I don't know, it gets old having to get a couple sets to make a definitive set but I am nit picking.
