Hawkman v. 1 is just great- i really like Murphy Anderson's clean line work on the series. it was very cool to see Hawkman team up with the Atom and then Adam Strange. may have to pick up that Adam Strange book now!
after Metal Men, of course.

i'm enjoying both Aquaman v. 1 and Metal Men v. 1 now, though i did some research on Metal Men and what DC has done to the team is very saddening. Doc Magnus on prozac, a demented killer, letting T.O. Morrow go... well, that's just sad.
ima write a piece on discovering the Metal Men in early 1973. boy i like this team.
no wonder i hate comics these days.
now Aquaman is about as corny as Green Arrow, but at least the sea is a different look, and no "aqua car" as well. were there many adventures of Aquaboy? i'd never read Aqualad's origin, so that was nice as well. i had read a few of the stories- the origin of Aquaman and the one about Aquagirl as well.
of course, the eville Lois makes an appearance. did Uncle Mort ever even try to apply logic to those stories? turning her into a mermaid and then back? yikes and gadzooks! no wonder DC had problems keeping readers!

I picked up JLA vol3 and Superman vol1 this weekend. I have to say JLA is probably my favorite comic, I really like the line up of the greatest superheroes in the world! I've always considered myself more of a Marvel fan than a DC fan, but that has definitely changed in the past 4 or 5 years. Not that i don't like Marvel, far from it-Stan was a great writer and Kirby and Ditko were just fantastic. Still, there's just something more legendary about DC's heroes. Anyhoo, the Superman book starts earlier than any of the other Showcases I've seen-June 1958. Anyone know why they choose this as a starting point? It seems to be just a random choice. I'm really getting a kick out of the stories. The very first story is really funny as Superman discovers someone is somehow managing to break into the Fortress of Solitude and is leaving him cryptic antagonizing messages. It turns out to only be Batman playing a practical joke on Supes! He got in by sneaking up north before hand and using an torch to cut a hatch in the giant key, and hiding inside it, got in when Superman unlocked the door! I'm almost half way through it now and have seen the first appearance of Brainiac, who was alot different here than in later versions as well as the first prototype Supergirl who was created when Jimmy Olsen made a wish with a magical Indian relic! She looks just like the real Supergirl who shows up later, but is romantically interested in Superman and keeps getting in his way when she tries to help him. She ends up sacrificing herself when crooks use kryptonite on Supes. She doesn't really die, she just goes back to limbo where Jimmy wished her into existence from. Readers or the writers must have liked the idea and revamped her into an actual recurring character about a year later. Lois is also hilarious here and would make any modern feminists crazy as all she really cares about is getting Superman to marry her! I know I shouldn't, but I find that kind of sexist humor from that era funny, I'm just not very politically correct. he he

Chris has some conjecture about why they started at that time frame, and why they go up to the mid-70s, but i forget at this moment exactly his reasoning. it's pretty sound, though. something about rights and payments.
i hate Lois from that time period, though laughing at her is a great idea.
i'm not a huge fan of either Batman or Superman from that time period (though they are certainly better than anything post 1989 or so) but i do love the JLA books. i need to get the third one.

got Hawkman v. 2 a few days ago and it is pretty good. really enjoy Murphy Anderson, and the change to Dick Dillon is a bit jarring, especially when Dick draws Hawkman's wings as tiny cheribum wings! that was a bit strange. the volume ends with it turning into Hawkman and the Atom, which is a bit of a strange team. still, lots of fun.

got my Metal Men vol. 2 the other day, and while i still love it, you can tell the times they are a'changin'. aside from sticking references about the Batman tv show in, they also stick Batman himself in any way they can.
and the "hip" dialog... well, it doesn't work very well. any time DC tries that, it never works well. and i can't even go into the speech pattern of "Dr. Yes" without cringing.
still, i really like the characters, which makes me hate what's been done to them even more.

reading Teen Titans v. 2, which really proves that the writers had no idea what the then "hip" jargon really was. or that they could write it. still, some nice artwork in these stories. too bad they went the "relevant" route with the whole "Mr. Jupiter" story arc, no powers, no costumes (yeah, you could stop Kid Flash from using his powers, or Wonder Girl from using hers, sheh, as if) and they take the death of one character way too hard.
at least it gave them something different to do with the characters. was cool seeing Aqualad (of all people) telling off the whining Titans.

got the first Atom book- a little Atom goes a loooong way. at least the twist is HE wants to get married to Jean, and instead of becoming a crime fighter out of revenge or something altruistic, does it to help her become a great attorney so she'll accept his proposal. great artwork in this one, i gotta say.
