Don Dohler, the filmmaker who created the low-budget horror gems "The Alien Factor," "The Galaxy Invader," "Nightbeast" and others, has died. His work was mutlifaceted and included the publishing of Cinemagic Magazine, a filmmaking instructional journal, in the 1970's. He dove into his film work with great enthusiasm and a real love for the craft and will be greatly missed.

I missed this when it was first posted and just saw a notice about it at the sma.com boards.
I was an ardent user of Cinemagic in guiding my early attempts at animation. All of my friends had them and we traded issues back and forth depending on what we were filming and needed to reference from the magazines at the time.
It's sad to see someone die prematurely due to illness or cancer and this is definately a sad day for people like me who grew up with his publications.

I have more or less a similar story to tell...my friends all had issues of Cinemagic (I guess we were all a bunch of geeks!) and these were the most helpful thing in the world when we were putting together our little 8mm epics.
Later on, I ran into many others who had "started out" with Cinemagic. When I got to see Dohler's movies around 1990, I enjoyed them tremendously. I never met Don Dohler but I certainly feel I knew him through his work, and this news brings a real sadness.
