America is at war! we see a bunch of the work of sabotuers as the narrator explans what is going on. they use SECRET CODES to get the info into the country!
Dan Barton is fired from the Police Force for gross derelection of duty. he storms off and ends up joining the Nazi group. naturally, he is a secret agent, sent by the FBI to infiltrate the group and smash them.
Stover and Professor Clyde fly to whatever city Dan is in, and of course the enemy agents follow them. Dan ends up in the way, and gets arrested. Stover visits him in prison and they discuss the real mission- to smash the Nazi ring!
Dan escapes prison, but then the Nazis kill Stover. the Nazis find Dan and "blackmail" him into joining them. it's at the Green Lantern bookstore! he won't squeal to stooges, though, he wants to talk to the boss. they drug Dan, and leave. the Japanese agent is told to be careful, as "these Americans are very unimaginative about their prison camps." he also does the liquor serving.
Dan of course, faked his drugging and escapes. Pat and Jean confab about their "black commando" outfit. Jean leaves, and Dan shows up. he convinces Pat he's an agent, and they head out to stop the Ratzis.
the Ratzis get in, but the Black Commando shows up and naturally, a fistfight breaks out. a gas tank is ruptured, and explodes!
the set up is excellent, and a nice twist with Stover getting killed- he's the only person that knows Dan is a double agent, so he's got to be careful.
then we get the Code Breakers with the Major. he shows us how to make them.
next- Shadow of the Swastika

Even with all of my perusing of the serials groups I hadn't noticed that The Secret Code was supposed to be a good one. I think I always kinda mishmashed it in my mind with The Clutching Hand, which is supposed to be a true stinker.
It'll be interesting to see how this one turns out!

the Commando wakes up just in time, grabs the papers and leaps out the window. Pat rescues him and drives him back the Nazi HQ. the Nazis head back, and "Tyler" the Leader, is annoyed at them for failing in this venture.
Jean asks the Chief about the explosion and the Black Commando. Jensen listens in on the conversation. Tyler talks to Dan and he wants Dan to recover the rest of the rubber formula. Dan doesn't "heil" Hitler, but says "heel Hitler!" instead.
Dan goes to Pat right after Jean leaves. they figure out what to do with the plans. Dan tells them the BC wants $50,000 for the plans. Tyler puts Project 83 into comission at 3PM. it's a raid on the treasury! the Ratzis use a gas bomb, and then the BC shows up! he clobbers them and locks the dough back into the vault. the cops give chase as he gets to the top of the building. the BC swings off the flagpole, but it gives way and down he goes!
Major Burton talks more about transpositional codes.

they bring 17 and get to use the "decoder" and get the new plan. meanwhile, Dan gets the lowdown on the nerve gas, which paralizes, not kills. Dan messes with the gasmask and puts the prof out. he then heads out to stop the new plan!
17 gets to see heat seeking bombs before they are loaded onto the plane. BC boards the plane and a fist fight breaks out. then our boys start trying to bring the plane down! they hit the plane!

Dan brings the formula, but won't give it to anyone but the Leader. he also wants the $50K! the Leader wants the formula, and they need to take over the weather station so the Japanese can bomb the West Coast!
Pat gets chewed out for not catching Dan. Joan wants to know how he can fight with himself (she thinks he's the BC).
Dan hands over the formula, but they don't get the key page. Dan also helps them plan to get into the gov't observatory. he breaks in for them, but leaves the phone where the guard can use it. the ratzis then handcuff Dan to the car, but he's prepared with a lockpick. he knocks his guard out and the BC appears!

it is a small explosion, so the BC is unharmed. he gets out the window and back to the ratzis car in time to keep his charade up. he also puts the oufit on Marvin, to really trick the rats.
Pat gets grilled about Dan by the Chief, the g-men AND Jean. the g-men are going to tail him. Dan gets to Pat's, and lets him know he was tailed.
the Leader can't talk to Dan, the nazis are having Allied problems. they need oil. Dan fakes a leg injury and then heads out after the ratzis to stop the oil plunder.
a fight breaks out, the oil is lit- will the BC be barbequed?

Tyler decides to make a payment to the BC, so they can destroy him. Dan mails the money to Pat, who promptly faints. Pat mails it to the Sarge. he makes pals with the fed, Hogan, who's tailing him as well.
Stahl is under suspicion, so they need to get him to the nazi sub. Dan tells Pat what's going on as well, as far as he knows. naturally, the BC gets on the boat and battles both shipmen and the ratzi- they drop a ton of cargo on him!

I can't believe I've always passed this one by. It sounds at least as good as SPY SMASHER. EDIT: looking it up at Todd Gault's Movie Serial Experience I read this I don't mind derivatives at all as long as they are done well. For instance I find Inframan just as good or better than a lot of Ultraman or Kamen Rider shows. Same goes with THE SPIDER which comes from Popular Publications ripping off Street & Smith's THE SHADOW. So it was funny to feel reminded of SPY SMASHER from your descriptions and then read Todd's comment. I'm totally looking forward to seeing this one!

BC rolls out of the way, and Pat takes a potshot at him, but "misses". Hogan chases Stahl right into the arms of Pat. Dan returns to the lair, and finds out that the rubber process is the failure.
the Leader wants Stahl out of jail, before he spills any secrets. Jean grills Pat again about the BC. Dan makes the Leader put him in command of springing Stahl. he pumps Pat for the info. then Jean shows up and they try to talk her out of helping them.
while getting Stahl released, Jean gets caught trying to take photos. the BC springs into action! as he battles the ratzis, the car goes off a cliff!

the Leader wants the men to capture Jean so he can have a chat with her. Dan warns her, but do we think she will pay attention? nope, she gets picked up in a taxi by one of the gang. right before they start on torturing Jean the BC shows up. naturally a fistfight breaks out. they use tear gas to escape the BC.

Pat does his best "stooge" and gets in the g-man's way to give Dan time to get clear. Dan is hanging off the eave when it suddenly gives way!

Dan and Pat catch Von Berrne and Dan takes his place. they take him to the leader and a fight breaks out! Dan jumps out, jumps on a bike and roars off. the ratzis give chase! a truck makes him head off the cliff!

the BC plunges into a pond, gets out and escapes in the back of the truck that drove him off the road. Dan then gets "found" all tied up and knocked out.
meanwhile the Chief and the Feds grill Pat, who gets suspended because he won't answer questions about the BC. he also knows he's been framed (as he tells Jean). he switches ID with the taxi driver Clancy (famed Irish brotherhood) and eludes the g-men.
the ratzis want Barton to bring in Pat (they think Pat's the BC). it's another test of his loyalty to their cause. Dan and Pat meet at a diner, to make plans. meanwhile, the feds corner Jean and try to make out Pat's burned note to Jean. off they go to the Green Lantern!
Dan brings Pat in, and the rats want Dan to liquidate him. and then Dan shoots him, and the Leader does as well!
interestingly, the BC does not appear in this episode at all. there was no need for him to.
next- Dead Men of the Deep

Dan stops the Leader from shooting Pat. then a fight breaks out. they battle clean into the bookstore. the feds and Jean show up, finally. Jean gets handcuffed to the car so she can't disappear. the feds crash one of their cars into the store, and Pat, Dan and Jean escape in the other one. after giving the feds the slip, our heroes go back to the diner.
the cook gives them up to the feds, but they are wise to his tactics and leave the diner. they then decide to scope out the "Liberty" employment agency where the spies get their orders. Pat goes in to register, but one of the ratzis sees him and goes to report to Thysson.
they plan on using Pat to trap Dan. the Black Commando is the one that shows up, but the trap is sprung! they drop a gasbomb in!
last chapter- The Secret Code Smashed

the ratzis stupidly leave a chair and the BC smashes the window to get out. the luck of the Irish- the bullet bounced off his cabbie badge! they look through the hideout, and Dan manages to crack the code! Pat has to go to to the Point.
every cop in the city is after them. Jean reminds Dan of a trick he played on a gang last year, and they are gonna do it again. Dan and Pat get to the Point where they intercept the secret message. they have 20 minutes to stop the gang from leaving via submarine! Dan signals the feds via telephone wire. the feds head out (with Jean) and Dan and Pat go in swinging! the ratzis get the drop on Dan and Pat, but Hogan and the feds show up, and the sub goes blooey!
Jean can't print the story of the year, but Dan still has to be an undercover agent to intercept new codes!
a darn good serial. Paul Kelly is an excellent actor, and does a good job as a heel and hero. Anne is very cute and lively as Jean, and the rest of the cast is quite able. the action scenes are about the best i've seen from Columbia. i'm surprised there was never a sequel, and that this is not that well known.
