If you live in the Chicago area you should already know by now that WCIU tv is expanding it's sister station METV into METOO on channel 48.Well I've been looking over their programming and saw that on Sunday March 3rd at 7am they will air the Japanese classic tv show JOHNNY SOCKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT.This is from the same company that created the tv shows that ultimately became the POWER RANGERS but it's from the mid sixties. This show is notorious for unintentionally hillarious special effects.Still the shows got plenty of monsters and aliens running around to ensure a good time.METOO will air an hour [two episodes] on Sunday Morning March 2nd at 7am!!!
By the way it appears that METOO's Sunday lineup will be dedicated to Sci-fi and horror themed shows on Sunday with shows like BATMAN,SUPERMAN[50'S]BUCK ROGERS,BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and even the Boris Karloff hosted show THRILLER!!!

:(I want to get a cable box so I can get a better singal. However there is an inherint charm on watching these stations with the ol' bunny years antennas.Takes me back to my childhood when I didn't have cable or vcr and had to watch UHF tv for entertainment.Of course back in them goold ol' days UHF tv really rocked.WGN channel 9seemed to rule Sundays with THE LONE RANGER CISCO KID SUPERMAN and TARZAN and afterwards they ran FAMILY CLASSICS which sometimes featured some great classic sci-fi film like WAR OF THE WORLDS or MYSTERIOUS ISLAND and even the 60's BATMAN movie.UFLD Channel 32 had some great cartoons plus the BATMAN tv show plus they had MONSTRUOUS MOVIES and SON OF SVENGOOLIE on Saturday.MONSTRUOS was ok to watch but Son of Svengoolie was defiantely a must see since it featured the greatest horror host ever plus some better films than MONSTRUOUS MOVIES.Channel 44[before it became a Telemundo station] also rocked big time since during the afternoons they aired in a two hour time slot SPACE GIANTS JOHNNY SOCKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT ULTRAMAN and SPECTREMAN!!! I didn't find out until only recently that they also had monster movies on channel 44 but usually late at night which might explain why I never got to see any of them.Ah thems were the days.

I don't know if this was written into the original Japanese script or was a result of the english dubbing but the episode of Johnny Socko and His Fying Robot titled DESTROY THE DAM has three of the best lines ever uttered in a tv show:
Japanese Defense Minister: " Those scientists are always trying to tell us what to do but I just don't listen." [Kinda like some of our elected officials!]
Dr Botannus: " Well there goes another plane."
Johnny Socko: " Darn that plant!"
Gotta love that english dubbing!!!
Also in that episode you have Dr Dorian flipping out worse than William Shatner on goofballs toward the end of the episode. In fact the english dubbing doesn't do justice to his over the top fit of hysterics!!!

The dubbing on JOHNNY SOKKO was done by the same folks in Coral Gables, Florida who dubbed the AZTEC MUMMY and SANTO movies released by K. Gordon Murray. They were more concerned with matching the lips and damn the dialogue, while Titra in NYC was concerned with both matching lips and integrity in dialogue -- there's a vast difference in the dubbing on ULTRAMAN and JOHNNY SOKKO, and you know that the folks dubbing SOKKO wrote intentionally funny dialogue.

I always thought that the dubbing on the Mexican movies was a bit cartoony in nature. This explains alot.

how's the quality of the show look? i'd wondered who dubbed Sokko, since it seemed like it would be the AIP crowd, but they were never in the credits.

I also wondered why AIP had the Coral Gable K Gordon Murray folks dub JOHNNY SOKKO. The same folks also dubbed the anime series PRINCE PLANET for AIP (in fact Prince Planet and Johnny Sokko have the same voice). I always thought the off kilter dubbing fit Johnny Sokko though, as the there is also a world of difference between the tone of Ultraman and Johnny Sokko as well that is just inherent in the shows themselves. The dialogue might be intentionally funny at times, but it's not full blown mockery as the TNT version of Ultraseven or, even worse, the dub on Ultraman Tiga!

Well I am watching it on a UHF antenna so I'm really not gettign the best picture quality. However the episodes do start with the ORION logo so I guess they are the best prints possible.
