I don't know if you've seen it, but he was great in Doomsday Gun, based on the true story of Dr. Gerald Bull, a scientist who was working to build a supergun for Iraq. Excellent movie, starring Langella and featuring Kevin Spacey and Alan Arkin. Good drama watch if you need a break from guys in rubber monster suits.

Golly, I love the 79 Nosferatu, it's one of my faves. It's a film I too didn't think too much of the first couple of times I saw it, but it grew on me. The music, the scenery, it's just very atmospheric and I dig that. Hell, I even have the shorter 98 min. version that has yet to be released on dvd....

I honestly expected to enjoy the film, and had high hopes after the creepy opening filled with mummified corpses. Sadly, it went downhill from there for me. Other than Kinski, the performances were very stiff, especially Isabelle Adjani in the role of Lucy. I also found the the sets rather antiseptic, given the dreamy quality Herzog was trying to convey. I was extremely disappointed with the Count's castle, found it rather bland and without any atmosphere whatsoever.
The score struck me as uninspired, boring, and repetitive. Presented with the opportunity to treat a silent classic to a grand score, it came up very short. However, I must admit it did complement the mood of the flm: dull. As the film wound down, I aslo felt it took away any fear or terror from the count. Herzog made the scourge of rats seem more important than any power of the vampire himself. The plague was wiping everyone out, not the vampire himself. The whole climax was rather weak as well. Watching Kinski wriggle around on the floor was almost comical, and the Harker-is-the-new-Count thing was lame.
I'm not a fan of arthouse films like this or works by Dario Argento. I find them rather pretentious, and the general consensus seems to be that if you don't enjoy that type of film, then you just "don't get it"; it's too highbrow for the average Joe to understand. It doesn't take some mystical artistic sense beyond the reach of most viewers to realize boring is actually just boring, and not something so artful as to be above one's own senses. I prefer films along the lines of the Hammer offerings, films that actually do create great atmosphere with sets and mood, along with an entertaining story and lively performances from the cast. This type of film just isn't for me.

i haven't seen it, but i've always wanted to. i really enjoy CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA and this sounds like fun as well. Corman always had a sense of humor in his movies, witness IT CONQUERED THE WORLD, etc.
anyway, good review, i like the picture too!
