Audrey Dalton as Maude Sardonicus
Guy Rolfe as Baron Sardonicus
Vladimir Sokoloff as Henryk Toleslawski

It's 1880. A British physician, Sir Robert Cargrave, receives a letter from an ex-lover asking him to come to her husband's castle in Gorslavia. On his way to the caste the doctor meets a local man who reacts to the name Sardonicus the way Transylvanian peasants react to the name Dracula. At the castle the doctor meets a one eyed servant, Krull, a maid who's face is covered with leeches, his ex lover the Baroness and the Baron who hides his face behind a mask. The Baron's face has been twisted into a permanent grin and he wants Sir Robert to cure him, or else. As bad as his face is it is his Baron Sardonicus is his unfeeling heart that is the real problem. He seems to enjoy inflicting pain and suffering on others.
The gimmick:
The Punishment Poll
As people entered the theater they were handed a card which has a hand with a thumb pointing up printed at the top and a hand with thumb pointing down on the bottom. At the end of the film William Castle appears on the screen asking the audience to hold up their cards in order to choose the conclusion of the film. If the majority votes thumb up Sardonicus receives mercy if the majority votes thumb down, Sardonicus is punished. Castle counts the votes, announces that the majority has chosen punishment and shows the conclusion of the film. There was no second ending filmed, no matter how the audience really voted the film always ends Sardonicus being punished.
Sadly he's nearly done with these fun gimmicks. For his next film, a comedy about a magical coin Castle had plastic coins handed out.
We need a William Castle now, some one who makes going to the movies fun again.
This was another Netflix rental.
