Frankie's (Trevor Lissauer) parents are in Europe for the summer. After awaking from a nightmare about two female vampires, Frankie spends the day on the beach with his best friend. After the crowd has left, leaving Frankie and Bogie alone on the beech a bat-like creature attacks Bogie, biting him on the neck. Then a man in a wet suit appears, claiming to have fled from a simlar beast. He invites the boys to his beach to meet some women. Bogie is all for it but Frankie is supicious of the stranger and tells Bogie that he has two tickets to the KISS concert. Bogie declines Moondoggie's invitation but invites Moondoggie and his women to Frankie's place later. As Frankie complains to Bogie about his giving out his name and address to a stranger, Moondoggie walks down the beach and fades away. Frankie admits to Bogie that he had no tickets.
Later, Moondoggie appears in Frankie's living foom. Frankie's dog Fluffy growls. When Moondoogie introduces Katrina and Sulka, Fluffy growls somemore. At the sight of the women dressed in black, Frankie's good sense deserts him. He tells Fluffy to be quiet and allows the three strangers move in. Frankie also meets Renfield, er Bruno, whom Moondoggie says will like sleeping outside. THe nighbors pets disappear, aperently into Bruno's pots and pans.
Frankie begins to be supicious of his guests, they're never seen during the day and he finds three coffins in his parents bedroom. His girlfriend doesn't believe in vampires and two "psychics" can't help him but they do recommend that he contact Dr. Ludwig von Helsingmeister aka The Big Kahuna (Adam West).
This not a serious film. Its full of really bad jokes such as Moondoggie saying "We've just flown in from San Francisco" and Frankie replying "Let me guess your wings are tired." Bruno preparing a dish he calls "Persian Delight" followed by Frankie learning that his neighbor's persion cat Delight is missing. A radio report about DJ Disco Rick's body being found, drained of blood, ending with "Disco is dead". von Helsingmeister's recorded phone message says "Take two garlic cloves and call me in the morning, if you're still alive."
I got this for $1. I bought it because the description on the case mentioned Adam West. He doesn't appear until the end of the film. He's an agend surfer who's a decendant of the Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's book, Stoker dropped the meister because it didn't roll off the toung. Although he has no actual experience with vampires fighting the spawn of Satan is in his blood.
Its not certain until the end whether Moondoggie, Katrina and Sulka are really vampires or wether Frankie is just having nightmares from reading a book on American vampires. Typical of modern vampire films vampires are not afraid of garlic or crosses.
Rated PG-13 for vampire violence, crude dialogue and sexual content. The sexual content is suggested rather than explicit.
American Vampire is neither a great vampire movie nor a marvelous comedy. Unless you like bad adolecent humor or just have to see what a gray haired Adam West is up to, give this a pass.
