Long before Animal Planet or the Crocodile Hunter, Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler brought the Wild Kingdom into Americas homes.
Due Tuesday, April 12, 2005 are two three disc DVD sets:
Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: The African Wild Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: Wild Cats
I was wondering if this series would come out on DVD. I just put both sets in my Netflix queue.

i loved watching this show and "The Wild, Wild World of Animals" even if i only saw mostly bird shows of both. i still remember Mutual of Omaha's toll free number:
1-800-228-9800
since Marlin mentioned it SO many times during the show, usually while Jim was wrestling an anaconda or some other dangerous animal.

I just came from www.wildkingdom.com where they have a video clip of Marlin holding an anacanda. The description: "Yes, Marlin got out of the jeep".

Ah, yes, I have memories of the family making popcorn and gathering around the tube for this show. It's funny the stuff they are releasing on DVD--like everything! I wonder how Mutual of Omaha's doing these days. Probably very well, from the amount of advertising this show afforded them...

i actually called the 800 number the other day, got a busy signal. i was pretty surprised at all the info about the show i never knew- i just watched it and enjoyed it. Sunday nights, or early evening, i guess. it was on at 6 or 6:30 PM with the Wild World of Animals before or after, and then the Disney show (no cartoon again? Charlie the Lonesome Cougar? again? darn!) so that was most of Sunday evening.

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingom: Wild Cats: Disc 1
Despite the cover showing a spotted cat this disc contains three episodes about lions: "King of the Beasts" "Lion Country" "Lions Under the Net"
The first episode is hosted by Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler, the second just Marlin, the third Marlin and a guy named Stan Brock. For the first two episodes Marlin doesn't leave his office, but there is a scene of Jim seeing how lions will react to a recording of a strange male lion roaring in the first episode. For the third episode Marlin and Stan go to Rhodesia to try using a rocket powered net to capture Wildabeasts and lions which have escaped from a park onto a ranch. The ranchers object to the lions eating their cattle. There is actually more of the wildbeasts then the two lions in this episode. I learned from this episode that white rinos and black rhinos are of opposite temperment. The white are shy and timid, the black agressive and bad tempered. The timid white are easy pray for human hunters. BTW no creature but man hunts lions.

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingom: Wild Cats: Disc 2
The picture on this disc is of a brown faced wildcat, probably a lion. The episodes on this disc all feature jaguars. So somebody goofed. The first disc has the picture that should be on this disc and this disc has the picture that should have been on the first disc.
The three episodes on this disc are:
"El Tigre" "Round-Up on the Rupununi" "Netting a Jaguar"
In the first episode Marlin, Jim, a big cat expert named John and his three dogs go after a jaguar that has been killing livestock. When they find the jaguar Marlin and Jim watch as a coyote tries to steal the goat it killed. The coyote fails. After the coyote leaves a baby jaguar appears. The task of capturing the adult jaguar alive and unharmed just got hard. Now they have to capture an mother guarding her offspring.
In the second episode Marlin visits a ranch in Gehana where he meets rancher Stan Brock. Marlin and Stan end up searching for a jaguar which killed a cow. Apparently this episode introduced Stan Brock. There was very little of the jaugar, this episode is mostly about cows (yawn). What the origianl rational for filming this episode is I don't know. Cows are not wild animals and I found this episode to be very dull. Maybe some NY city families found it interesting but I'm from Nebraska, there is nothing unsual about seeing cows.
In the third episode Marlin and Stan decide to try using a canon net (net launched by rocket) to capture a jaguar that's been killing live stock on a goat ranch in Mexico.
Stan Brock must have been co-host before Jim Fowler. All three episodes on this disc have Marlin on horseback.
The jaguar is the largest wildcat in North, Central and South America. Smaller than lions or tigers but still a powerful hunter. Capturing the jaguars alive and moving them further away from domesticated animals is a lot harder than just shooting them.
Disc 3 next week.

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom Wild Cats disc 3
This disc has a close up of the face of a tiger.
The episodes are "Cheetah Country" "Lions of the Gir Forest" "Prowling Night Lions" "Wonderful Ways of the Wild"
The first is hosted by Marlin Perkins alone. He doesn't leave his office. The Africa segment is narrated by someone else. Sad story about a Cheetah and her 4 kittens. Sad because two are killed.
The second episode is hosted by Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler. It's a look at the lions of India. In the 17th and 18th centuries lions were as plentiful in India as tigers. At the time of this episode there were only about 300 lions in India. Marlin makes the trip to Gir. I was most interested in a battle between a mongoose and a cobra which Marlin witnessed while walking to a local village.
The third episode is hosted by Jim Fowler with wildlife photographer Peter Gros. They travel to Africa to assist in relocating lions which have been entering farm land and killing lifestock.
The final episode is a compilation of scenes from different places and different animals as Marlin tries to answer the questions most commonly asked of him, what is the most unusual behaivor he's observed in animals, what are some of the close calls they've had and what are the most beautiful animals he's seen. Among the most unsual behaivors was an otter using a rock to open shelfish, the trapdoor spider and a species of skunk which stands on its head to spray its noxious spray. The close calls include a bull seal which didn't want Marlin on its beach, a jaquar that did not want to be rescued from a flood and an angry elephant. Among the most beautiful were a male lion, a tiger and a cheetah.

Mutual of Omaha's Wildkingdom: The African Wild disc 1: This three epiodes on this disc are all about gorillas. Although the first two episodes are credited as starring Marlin Perkins & Jim Fowler and the third starring Jim Fowler with Marlin Perkins, Jim does not appear in any of them, they are all hosted by Marlin.
The three episodes are: Gorillas of the Mountains part 1 Gorillas of the Mountains part 2 Reunion with the Gorillas
All 3 episodes feature Dian Fossey who spent years with gorillas. The first two episodes take place after she had been with the gorillas for 10 years. The third episode takes place 6 years later. 3 of those years were spent in Africa, 3 back in the US. When she returned to Africa she was not sure if the gorillas would remember her. That's what the 3rd episode is about.
The second episode showed doctor Fossey destroying poacher's snares.
According to Dian Fossey beating of the chest is not a sign of aggression but of curiosity and when done by young gorillas may be an invitation to play. The gorillas become so used to her that they would walk right up to her and examine her camera. One female liked her to tickle her. This one after 3 years of not seeing Dian came right up to her and introduced her new sister who had been born while Fossey was away.
Dian Fossey was murdered December 26, 1985. Although one of her students was tried in absentia and found guilty, he denies doing it , says that it was probably poachers tired of her ruining their traps and having them jailed.

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: The African Wild: Disc 2
The three episodes on this disc cover elephants.
"Tuskers Below" "Elephants of Lake Kariba" "Luengwa Valley - Last Home of the Elephant"
The first episode Marlin and Jim travel to Africa to help capture a young elephant for research into how to better mark elephants in order to monitor over population. In the second episode Jim and Peter (Gros) ride the rapids to Lake Kariba where they assist in rescuing a young elephant which stuck its foot in a snare. The third episode features Jim alone.
There's one more disc in this set.
Oh, there is one other regular in the series, at least in the early days, the show's mascot WK the chimp.

Mutal of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: The African Wild Disc 3
This is the final disc of this set and the last one (so far) of the series. It has 4 episodes: The African Game Catcher To Carch a Giraffe Hippo Memorable Moments in the Wild Kingdom
The first episode stars Jim Fowler with Marlin Perkins. Jim travels to three different South African wild life ranches to help capture different animals which are to be sold to different ranches. First he helps to capture a kind of antelope using a net, then he helps run down a couple of wildabeasts and finally he assistants with catching a young male giraffe for breading purposes. The second episode which is older than the first stars Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler. Both travel to a ranch in Rhodesia to assist in capturing a zebra and a giraffe. The methods used for capturing the giraffes in the two episodes were different. By the time of the later episode (the first one shown here) they had learned to use drugs. The third episode sees Marlin, Jim and big game hunter Stan go after a hippo. Marlin says the hippo is the most difficult large animal to capture. He says they destroy nets that are used on them. According to Jim they recognise traps and walk around them and if hit with tranqulizing drugs they head for deep water and when the drug finally kicks in they drown. The final episode has Marlin and Jim looking back at some of their favorite moments from the series, including Stan's almost getting gored by a water buffalo and Jim's getting a bath thanks to a moose.
I think Mutal of Omaha should release more episodes of their Wild Kingdom.

What is the name of the chimp that was the mascot for Wild Kingdom? "WK" doesn't sound right.

I was disappointed there were no mountain lions on the wildcats DVD. I can't explain why but they're my favorite wildcat. Its a shame that the only confirmed sitings of mountain lions (cougers, pumas, painters, etc) in Nebraska are when someone has shot one dead, which legally they can only do if its a threat to humans or livestock. If it were up to me, it would only be legal if threat to humans. If mountain lions kill cows its because we took over the land and drove away their normal prey.

I found another Mutal of Omaha's Wild Kingom set, "Dangerous Encouters in the Wild". Its a 3 disc set. Stars Marlin Perkins with Jim Fowler, Peter Gros and Stan Brok. The back of the case says the 10 episodes in this set are the most requested.
Disc 1 Hammerhead Sharks of the Sea of Cortez Sharks of the Blue Waters Sunken Ships and Sharks
Disc 2 In Search of the Great White Shark Exploring the Reef Bayou Backwaters
Disc 3 Where the Crocodile is King Giants of Dadanawa Operation Alligator Challenge to Survival
