I am watching this again. I am trying to be open minded so I can give an objective opinion on it. I remembered this from when I was four, well I remembered Lumpy playing with his model ships. There are at least a bunch of Kenner Commercials and the Muppet show with Luke and the Droids, those along with the cartoon that introduces Fett make the DVD top notch. The effects aren't that bad. Is this really any cheesier than most other kids fare that was on TV back then? Yes it is way cheesy by Star Wars standards, but this thing hardly had the same budget as the movies. Still, it is kind of hard to watch. Lumpy looks like Chewie got freaky with an Ewok. I wonder how good this thing did in the ratings?

it's astoundingly bad. i like lots of stuff like this, but... man, it's not good. even the cartoon part sucks, despite the appearance of everyone's favorite worm food!
i bet it did well in the ratings, since the whole world only wanted MORE MORE MORE SW stuff at the time! i remember watching it and thinking "how can this come from the same guy that gave us Star Wars? i mean, i love Harvey Corman, but not in SW." i'm glad it was made, since it really annoys the most hardcore fans (and Lucas).
wonder why he never redid it with better cg effects? this certainly can't have been what he imagined in 1978!

Yeah, it is pretty sucktacular. Still, if I have everything else on DVD then I had to have this. The DVD I have is cool, it has 53 Kenner Star Wars commercials and the Muppett Show with Luke, 3PO, R2, and Chewie on it as special features.

Yeah, I saw this when it was on TV originally--it wasn't so bad when I was 10 years old. This was the 70's, when anything that was vaguely spacy or disco-like was automatically acceptable.
I watched a tape of it years later and my reaction was "Yipes!" Now when I think about it I get cold shivers!

i remember after 77 Darth Vader and the driods were on tv constantly, usually not talking, but that was enough, since we wanted ANY kind of SW exposure we could get at the time.
i have a tv guide with Darth appearing on TWO Saturday preview specials, ABC and CBS! i think he might have said two prerecorded sentences on both. man, that was a time. the Muppet thing was probably easy, since they were on the same set at the time (could have led to Oz getting the job for Yoda as well).

Boy, I really disliked it when it first aired and I was the target audience. I think the cartoon is OK - not spectacular, but it's like a gem compared to the rest of the special.
According to the fan mags, some unused footage from STAR WARS found its way into the special.
