i just finished watching this final Star Wars movie (or so the Germans would have us believe...) and here are some thoughts:
The Good:
the effects naturally are top notch. the fight scenes are really well done, especially the light sabre battles. i really enjoyed the funny droid speak- they had me laughing out loud several times. the direction, acting and script were all much better than the previous two movies. i quite liked Ewan as young 180 year old Obi Wan. the birth of Darth Vader was nice, a good homage to FRANKENSTEIN (1931), and seeing the Grand Moff was cool. was that James Earl Jones again? the final scene with little Luke was nice, especially with the music.
the Bad:
the movie drags a bit. an editor was really needed. Hayden is not the worst actor out there, but he's not good. what should have been THE emotional scene with Obi Wan toward the end was ruined by his ineptness. his "love" scenes with Padme were embarrassing as well, neither did a good job there, not that they had much to work with. there were also too many characters crammed in here, resulting in some, like R2D2 and C3PO getting short shrift. a little more humor would have been nice. what, is Yoda ONLY funny on Dagobah?
the ridiculous:
bouncing ball Yoda again. how does an 800 year old do that? looked just as bad as the last movie. "younglings"? that's the ONLY term Lucas could come up with? even "forclings" would have sounded better. there was also so much eye candy in scenes- just background noise for the eyes that only distracted from the main action. sometimes that's nice, but in every scene? i also got quite tired of Yoda's backward talking- was it constantly needed?
overall:
well, it's certainly better than the previous two, and possibly RETURN OF THE JEDI, or at least equal to it. it's not nearly as good as the first two movies, STAR WARS or EMPIRE though. so i wouldn't turn it off if i was seeing it on tv. i'll give it two paws out of four.
sorry if i got this back on topic...
