So far, when fans discuss tokusatsu favorites, they discuss Only the heroes but forget the Monsters, at least from what I've seen. So how about your favorites from the MONSTERS? For the time being, I'll discuss only a few, because I want to leave room to explain WHY I enjoyed them.
These come from the AKUMAIZA series. Although the tapes I have now, don't have subtitles, but I saw them when they were broadcast here in Hawaii during the 1970s, at which time they included subtitles, so I still have a good idea of the plotlines.
One Akumaiza MONSTER I enjoyed was KAPPADO who was interesting because he had the same biology as the Akumaiza hero GABURA. That is, instead of having blood flowing internally, they instead have WATER circulating in their veins. Kappado is well-aware of this circulatory peculiarity of Gabura's, and exploits that at every chance he gets. He stabs Gabura numerous times, and water spurts from those multiple holes.
But, tender-hearted as Gabura is, he does Not retaliate, as he regards Kappado as a brother, due to the biological peculiarity they have in common. It's ironic that although Gabura's brawny outward appearance makes him seem the most intimidating of the three heroes but he is the most compassionate on the team.
Another Akumaiza monster I enjoyed was SIREN whose speciality is ultra-sonics, using high-pitched sonic waves whose screeching sounds can incapacitate and even render people unconscious. SIREN was ZABITAN's best friend when ZABITAN used to serve the evil MEZALORD, so Zabitan tries desperately to persuade Siren to break ties with the criminal group.
SIREN, on the other hand, does NOT see MEZALORD as evil. Because to him, the WHOLE Human Race is the Enemy in that he believes the Humans would conquer and subjugate the Subterreneans if given half a chance. So SIREN believes in what MEZALORD tries to accomplish.
At one point, as Zabitan tries to reason with Siren, Siren points a rifle at Zabitan. DARNIA (Zabitan's Girlfriend) sees this and understandably sees Zabitan as being in mortal danger, so she intervenes by using her powers to zap Siren. At this, Zabitan gets angry and infuriated at Darnia because Zabitan was just on the verge of getting Siren to join the Akumaiza. So in anger, Zabitan slaps Darnia on her face. This was the only thing which SPOILED the episode for me because no matter how angry a hero gets, he should never hit a Woman! Of course, if the Woman is the enemy such as YUKI-ONNA (Snow-woman) who appeared in a subsequent episode, then it's acceptable because the hero has to defend himself. But in DARNIA's case, it's his girlfriend!! So it's Unacceptable. The only flaw in this otherwise excellent episode.
So what are the favorite toku-Monsters among you fans? Please also include some descriptions of the monsters' abilities, specialty, and some idea of the plotline, just as I've given for my two favorites.
