I heard VCI was re-releasing their GORGO disc originally put out in 2002, but that it is an entirely new print that might actually be truly letterboxed and not cut off on the top and bottom of the screen like the original disc is. The source print is also supposed to be in better shape and have really sharp colors. This will be nice if it's true. I get so ticked off at the rash of phony letterboxed movies on disc! Anyone else heard anything about this?

Boy I hope that happens. GORGO had a huge impact on this 6 year old. I've got VHS versions, but not DVD, so I'll hold on for this new release. Thanks for the heads-up!

Wow, that stinks. So in those cases, we see twice as less of the complete image? Yeesh.

i think it was 1.66:1 that it was filmed in, tho sometimes the composition was for 1.85:1- neither of which are widescreen. el-brazo had a really nice side by side showing how much information was actually being lost.
of course, that was the old board...

I've often heard that in Britain, those fans have benefitted from seeing a much cleaner print of Gorgo than us Americans are used to. It makes sense, obviously, since the movie was made in the UK, but I just don't understand why Sony or MGM doesn't purchase the overseas rights to the movie. It would go perfectly with the "Midnight Marquee" series, I think.

now that i've done a bit more studying, sometimes the difference between the cropping and open matte is very slight, and most were framed to be 1.85:1 anyway, though shot in an open matte. it's all very confusing.
