This sequel to King Kong was released same year by same people, with same male lead.
One month after the death of King Kong his now infamous promoter is in hiding. He's trying to avoid the process servers working for those who want to sue him for damages caused by the giant ape. When he learns that in addition to 11 law suits, criminal charges (unspecified) have been filed he leaves the country on the same ship which brought Kong into the country. This time he's a partner in the shipping business. Of course he, his partner, two other men and a woman end up on Skull Island where they meet "Little Kong" who unlike his father is friendly.
A very different story. The former movie producer now feels guilty about King Kong being killed and tries to make it up to his son. This time he's the object of romance instead of the ship's first-mate. The mutiny probably would not have happened had the original first-mate not ran off and gotten married.
Not to give anymore away, but the ending made me sad.
I enjoyed Son of Kong. It seemd to go faster than the first film. I think the lead's acting was better too.
Son of Kong is available on a single DVD, by itself or bundled with King Kong and Mighty Joe Young. Since I received King Kong as a Chrismas present I bought the other two individually.

it's a good movie that really suffered in comparison to the original. i'm glad they did a different tone with it.
the scurvy scalawags would have mutineed (who would want to go back to Skull Island, anyway), but i sure hope the crew picked up the survivors after the end of the movie.
the animation is a lot smoother in this movie, which is amazing since it was out about 6 months after the original.

I've always enjoyed Little Kong. It's a nice follow-up and I agree, the difference in tone makes it unique. The interactions between Denham, Englehorn and Charlie are more in depth, and Helen Mack as Hilda is a sweet addition (ya gotta love her little monkey act - especially with Charlie as the lone clapper in the audience). The return to Skull Island is very cool (though the Native Chief ain't happy to see em again), and Little Kong's battles are really good in their own right.

I was clapping with him. I liked the monkey act.
