I finally got around to getting FF Vol. 1. I've also picked up several of the DC books. They are VERY nice.

i just picked up Thor v. 2, it's a lot of fun, but i do think Jack and Stan had started over-reaching themselves. the art is still good, as are the stories, but aside from the actual villains, they rely far too much on Loki hating Thor, and Odin never paying enough attention to ANYthing going on anywhere.
gonna pick up Ghost Rider next.

Well, there was a point where Kirby stopped delivering anything "new" because he was disenchanted with the system. That's why he ended up with DC.

I'm currently reading ESSENTIAL AMAZING SPIDERMAN number 7.Some of you may call me blasphemous but I think Ross Andru was a better SPIDERMAN artist than John Romita.

i had a lot of those comics, and Ross was actually the first Spidey artist i could identify- AND he dd my beloved "Superman vs Spider-man" crossover.
i picked up the Ghost Rider, Super Villain Team Up and the Avengers v. 4. man, i love those comics so much!

Man, they are SO much better than the sorry state of comics today, or comics of the past 10 years or so. I'm ashamed to say i only have ESSENTIAL SPIDER-MAN 1 and Dc's BATMAN ARCHIVE 1 but I did pick up a very cool hardcover from 1971 of black and white Superman reprints at a library booksale this Fall and I got l nifty little one buck black and white reprints of the first 3 issues of THE HULK, THE AVENGERS, FF and X-MEN for Chiristmas. Wish i could afford to get more of the essential books though.

Currently readin ESSENTIAL PETER PARKER SPECTACULAR SPIDERMAN VOLUME 2.I get the feeling this title was at the time the ugly sister of AMAZING SPIDERMAN.The stories are just not as good as the ones in AMAZING.

it seems like there was the demand- it was the start of too many titles for Spidey- Amazing, Spec. and Team Up. they should have made it more about Peter, since his name was in the title, and less about Spidey.

I picked up the Marvel masterworks Vol2 of Amazing Spider-Man today. I said in my earlier post I has Essential Amazing Spidey vol 1, but it's actually the Marvel Masterworks vol 1. Now I can go on from the Masterworks to the essentials for Spidey,as Masterworks vols 1 and 2 cover the same issues as Essential Spidey vol 1 with the exception of issue 20, but I couldn't see buying the whole first Essential volume for just 1 issue. Anyhoo, these early Spidey issues are just so great! Steve Ditko was perfect for Spidey-for some reason, i don't think Jack Kirby's style would have suited the wall crawler. I love that Spidey is drawn as a skinny kid, even in costume, something that was sort of lost over the years. I also like his large underarm webbing, which also disappeared over time.

it's so nice to have these being published. if it weren't for these books and the Showcase ones, i'd never read any comics at all any more!
which is sad, and something i never thought i'd say.

Currently reading ESSENTIAL AMAZING SPIDERMAN VOLUME 8.Perhaps the only really interesting here is that Wolverine makes his first appearance in a Spiderman comic in the same issue as a Punisher appearance though Wolvy never interacts with either of the two.My how that would change by the eighties.

i have found it interesting that i have been far more interested in getting the Showcase books instead of my beloved Marvels. of course, i have lots of the stories from these already- it seems like Marvel did a much better job of reprinting their stories than DC did.
or perhaps i was just more a Zombie than i'd care to admit!
still, i have Essential Fantastic Four v. 6 headed my way (for $8, i love eBay) and i am re-reading the first ones i have again.
the trick is to decide when to stop getting them. i only really wanted the Ditko Spideys and Stranges, and Werewolf By Night is only two volumes so a lot is decided for me.
i reckon i'll have the same issues (tee hee) with the Showcase as they get along.

One of these days I'd love to have many of the Showcase and Essential books. Then again ther're tons of TPBs I want as well. Stuff like the original Squadron Supreme, Crisis of Infinite Earths, The Champions, and the DC/Marvel &Almalgam stuff. The next one I really want is DC's Greatest Golden Age stories ever told. The first Essential book I want is the Defenders book and the first Showcase is Teen Titans. I have the Golden Age of Marvel TPB but I'd love to pick up the two Masterworks books they did as well. At some pint I will own every DC Archive book as well, those are so sweeeetttttt, but so damn expensive. That is why the Essential and Showcase books rock, the price is awesome.

i started re-reading the first Thor Volume, and his commie bashing is most comic. at least they always said the people of the countries weren't like their eville masters, but there were SO many of those eville masters back in those days in Marvel-dom as to be over amusing.
Stan really did soaps well, though.

starting the second Werewolf By Night volume, and i've managed to realize you should only read one or two of these stories in a row. i really noticed it in the FF v. 5, since Stan just went at breakneck speed and it was too much soap at once.

i did enjoy the rest of the Werewolf series, though you can see that they had ended it, then sales must have been good, so they stuck it out for 4-5 more issues. interesting to see them go for a more superheroic wolfie, but alas, it didn't last long enough to even tie up the remainder of the plotlines.
whatever DID happen to Topaz?

re-reading Thor v. 2, and i had forgotten so much of it (aside from the Hercules story where Thor goes to Hell to save Herc from Pluto, and i know that one by heart since it was in a tabloid sized book). good stuff here, but i don't think Vince Coletta was one of Jack's better inkers. i've heard he always did the splash page then hired the rest out to cheaper inkers.
