since the Filmation cartoons of the 60s are coming out soon, i decided to watch the Fleischer produced ones, several of which i have never seen (despite having the set for a few years.
what great cartoons. lots of mad scientists abound, and monsters and bad guys. they look great- at least the Image set i have does. cheap sets are everywhere, but i doubt they have taken the time and care to restore the cartoons as well as Bosko does.
interesting that Superman here still can't "fly" per se, just make huge leaps (so huge he might as well indeed be flying). he also has his x-ray vision, which he uses with the first ever transforming robots in "The Mechanical Monsters". i even like this Lois!
Bud Collyer does the voice of Superman/Clark Kent, and did the cartoon for years. he's the voice i hear when i read Superman comics.

Those Fleischer cartoons are IMO some of the most aesthetically pleasing American cartoons ever. They are simply beautiful works of art.

Yep, the Fleischer's definately knew how to make great looking cartoons. Speaking of which, there is a mega-set of Fleischer Popeye cartoons coming out at the end of July.

i watched all the Superman cartoons last night. it would have been fun to see a Fleischer Batman cartoon!
i have a really nice comp of the Popeye "movies" and 10 shorts, and while i like the character, i'm more a fan of the strip than the shorts, what with Olive being second only to 50s Lois Lane in annoying me!

I have $1 dvds of Superman, Popeye and Betty Boop (why the last I have no idea, just because I'm addicted to cheap DVDs I guess.) BTW the people at DVDSpot probably hate me for all the $1 DVDs I'm entering. Which they then have to verify.

this is the complete first season of 1960s Filmation Superman cartoons from 1966. while the animation isn't up to the 40s cartoons, it's still exciting and dynamic. Bud Collyer returns to voice Superman/Clark Kent. this Superman is pretty beefy, looking very much like a Curt Swan drawing animated. Adding to the fun are many of Superman's rogue's gallery of villains, Lex Luthor, of course, but the Parasite, Brainic, Toyman and Mr. Mxyzptlk all show up as well. he also defends the Earth from various aliens and giant monsters. and he does all this 6 minutes at a time!
it also has a great theme song!
the set looks good on DVD, though there is some speckling in the episodes. still, it's great to have the original theme and closing credits (they close each one after two episodes, as it would have been originally- missing a Superboy or Aquaman cartoon in the middle is all). it looks like the Superboy cartoons, which were in the first season are being held up to a legal dispute, or perhaps to not show Smallville how Superboy SHOULD be done. here's hoping they all get released in the future.

I must live in a cave, as I don't remember ever even hearing about the Filmation series you're talking about. I'll have to look it up!
EDIT: just watched one on google video. The overall design and art style actually reminds me of Osamu Tezuka! Interesting.

Got the IMAGE collection of Fleischer Superman toons today. I'm watching the "pilot" movie which I don't think I've ever seen before and I'm quite surprized that the Kents have been removed from the story. In the Fleischer version baby Kal El was picked up by a passing car and dropped off at an orphanage. What the?
Anyway, the image quality on these are really great. I heard that Warner Bros is digging the originals out of their archives and doing a frame by frame clean up on all of these for release later this year. That'll be something to see.

A lot of people have seen and been influenced by the Fleischer cartoons (not just the Superman ones!).
I always thought that the opening scenes of the movies "I Love Maria" and "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" were basically big homages to "The Mechanical Monsters." Bank being robbed by a big, hulking piece of machinery/giant robot.
Then, of course, there is the Sky Captain movie, but that actually has Fleischer Brothers written all over it...

watching these WB Superman cartoons- i really enjoy them. i've got the second and third season (had to buy them in reverse order) and they are so enjoyable. i wish someone cared enough about the Marvel heroes to do them this well.
well, forbearing Teen Titans style, that is.

watching this first season episode with Lana, and Clark is nuts to not pick her, STILL. this Lois is one of the better ones, but really, Lana loves Clark, not Superman, like Lois does.

watching the Doomsday cartoon now, it's pretty good, though i wish they could have made it longer and included a few of the other heroes that were in the story. action packed. wish i remembered more of the original story, but overall, it's good.
i'm a little tired of the faux anime style of most cartoons these days. Jimmy looks exactly the same as he does in the 90s cartoon.

I remember when I first really dived into real Japanese anime and I started drawing in that style. I got over it and went back to drawing in my own style. Hopefully this will happen culture wide at some point.
