The French sell one of their super sonic jets to an American airline. The first flight is scheduled to be to Moscow.
Weapons manufactor Dr. Kevin Harrison (Robert Wagner) is illegally selling weapons to countries hostile to the US and to terrorist organizations. When one of his employees decides to inform television reporter Maggie Whelan (Susan Blakely) a hired gun is sent to silence the man. In a very unproffesional manner the hired killer shoots the man in front of the reporter than fails to kill the eye witness. The reporter instead of going to the police goes to Dr. Harrison (whom she's apparently been dating). He of course denies everything and she believes him. Maggie Whelan is a blonde. As Maggie boards the Concorde flight she's handed an Air France bag contianing files which prove the agligations against her boyfriend. Dr. Harrison instead of hiring another hitman to take her out when the plane lands decides to shoot down the super sonic jet instead. Both a remote control droid and a fighter jet fail to destroy the plane, they only succeed in causing enough damage to force an emergency landing in Paris. Maggie is so dumb that doesn't figure out the attacks are aimed at her and meets with Dr. Harrison (who someone managed to beat the super sonic jet to Paris where she agreed to meet him when the Concorde was still scheduled to land in Moscow). Instead of poisning her drink or having her killed by a French mugger or something simple like that Dr. Harrison has two men sabotage the Concorde so it crash when it continues its journey to Moscow the next morning. Of course this third rediclous attempt to kill one woman fails.
Although it was clearly stated at the start of the film that the Concorde was flying to Moscow, and there are Russians on board, the female reporter claims she's taking the same flight to Paris. The richman who thinks he's Lex Luthor, asks her to meet him in Paris. The plane does end up landing at the airport in Paris but only after its damaged in the second attack and the captain refers to the Paris airport as their "alternative" airport. The plane was scheduled to land in Moscow yet two major characters both plan to be in Paris. And one of those did not expect the Concorde to actually land safely yet he still flies off to Paris and by some miracle actually gets there before the superr sonic jet.
Joe Patroni (George Kennedy), who appears in all the Airport movies, is working for his third corporation and has mysteriously gone from ground crew/mechanic to pilot with 30 years of experience. Makes no sense at all. He claims his wife has been dead for a year and his son is entering college. The original movie refered to "children" but the son is the only one seen or mentioned in the other films. The woman Joe meets in Paris looks just like the second version of his wife.
This is the worst of the Airport movies and thankfully the last. It's badly written, poorly acted and the special effects consists of very unrealstic looking animation. The only good thing about the movie is the music by Mission: Impossible composer Lalo Schafrin.
The first American audiences laughed at this dreadful movie so the stuido started promoting it as a comedy. The Concorde: Airport '79 was shown a lear later in the UK as The Concorde: Airport '80.
According to the IMdb the Concorde used in this film actually crashed on take off from Paris on July 25, 2000.
The Concorde: Airport '79 is vailable in the Airport Terminal Pack along with the other 3 (much better) Airpot films. The only bonus material on these dics are the trailers for each film.
I have one more movie set in an airplane.
