A surprise to me as well and very sad news. He was probably the most famous recluse when he retired from T.V. RIP Johnny. and thanks for the laughs and a chance for other comedians to get their start.

He was good to his boyhood home, Norfolk, Nebraska and to the University of Nebraska.
The Tonight Show was actually fun when he hosted it.

The Tonight Show just seemed to be more classy with him as the host. I always loved those Kreskin bits. Wonder if any angels have said, "and heeeerreeeee's Johnny." yet?

Monday night every time NBC went to a commercial break the local station ran a b/w clip from Johnny's Omaha talk show followed by a color clip from the Toniight Show followed by a screen thanking him for the years of laughter.
Monday's Lincoln Journal Star's top story was on his death, with more about him on page 4A and b/w photos on 5a. Tuesday's paper had another story remebering him on the front page as well.
His childhood home in Norfolk is for sale, on ebay.

Seems unreal he's gone. I remember being too young to stay up and watch the show, then being old enough, then seeing him retire. In between, I have lots of fond memories of watching The Tonight Show. Johnny was the best late night host ever.
He had such a great delivery and I always enjoyed his opening monologue. I also loved when he and Ed McMahon would get the mutual giggles and couldn't stop laughing. It was really infectuous.
God Bless Johnny. Thanks for all the laughs. RIP

He was definitely one of a kind. I always had a soft spot for Carnac and the Tea Time Movie.
R.I.P.

I added The Ultimate Carson Collection to my Netflix queue, but volume 1 is listed as "very long wait", seems I had the idea too late, everybody else wants it.

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind getting that Carson collection for myself one of these days.
Funny thing also that there is a generation (I think of my cousins who are turning 20 this year) that when “The Tonight Show” is mentioned, the first thing that pops up into their minds is Jay Leno. I watched the show all of the time in the 80s and early 90s, and it’s hard to believe that Johnny had been gone for a dozen years. I had always hoped that he would’ve come back, at least for one week to host “The Tonight Show” while Leno was on vacation. That would’ve been a big ratings bonanza for NBC, who probably did try to attempt such a thing.
The mystic Carnac was definitely my favorite of his characters. I do recall him holding that envelope to his head and saying “101 in Los Angeles”. Ed would then repeat “101 in Los Angeles”. Opens the envelope and reads the answer “Under the Reagan plan, how old do you have to be to collect Social Security!” Then another one. The answer was “The Los Angeles Dodgers”. Ed again repeats “The Los Angeles Dodgers”. Opening the envelope to read the answer, “Name someone trying to impersonate a baseball team!” Some of them were off the mark, but the funny ones really hit the bullseye.

I watched volume 1 of the Ultimate Carson Collection last night. The DVD consists of The Best of the 1960s and 70s & the Best of the 1970s and 80s. Both parts included clips of Johnny, Ed, Doc and Tommy and course guests. My favorite sequences was the Dragnet scatch Johnny and Jack Webb (Sgt Joe Friday) do. There's also a list of guests from 60s and 70s and short behind the scenes videos.
There was one brief bit from one of the Tea Time Movie sketches and some Karnac.
Guests included the current Tonight Show host and David Letterman, Flip Wilson's ugly baby on the train joke really made Johnny laugh. There's the Ed Ames scene were he throws a tomahawk and hits the target beween the legs causing the longest sustained audience laugh and Johnny to quip "I didn't know you were jewish". Don Rickles shows up unannounced and gets tossed in a hot tub by Johnny. Of course there were animals, including the Cheetah (I think) which sent Johny running into Ed's arms and the ape that punched Johnny in the mouth.
I'm looking forward to volume 2.

The Ultimate Carson Collection Volume 3
His last two episodes of "The Tonight Show" Excerpts from the final episode from different camera angles. Featurette on Johnny's career. History of the Tonight Show Biographies Guest Lists for final two episodes
I don't find Robin Williams amusing so I skpped over most of his segment in the final guest episode. Bette Midler was very entertaining. The final episode shows clips of some of the guests who appeared on the show over Johnny's 30 years as host. Johnny thanks Ed, Doc and all the behind the scenes staff and of course the audience.
Over all I found "The Ultimate Carson Collection" disappointing. Really doesn't show all that much of Johnny Carson's 30 years on the Tonight Show. Maybe some day they'll release a larger collection.

The Carson estate has gifted the University of Nebraska Lincoln with 5 million dollars, bringing the total Johnny Carson has given to UNL to 11 million.
