Atom Man Vs. Superman (1950)
Kirk Alyn as Superman/Clark Kent Noel Neill as Lois Lane Lyle Talbot as Luthor/The Atom Man Tommy Bond as Jimmy Olsen Pierre Watkin as Perry White
Chapter 1, "SUPERMAN FLIES AGAIN" Metropolis is hit by a crime wave, carried out by a gang led by the scientific genus Luthor (pronounced Lew-Thor except by Kirk Alyn who pronounces it Lewther). When Luthor tries to blackmail the city by threatening to destroy it Superman goes into action. Luthor uses a sonic weapon to destroy a bridge. Superman saves a woman who somehow got past the police to drive on the bridge, then using his super hearing and x-ray vision to locate Luthor's hideout he captures the mastermind.
A year later another crime wave strikes the city, Luthor is in prison, in solitary confinment so he couldn't possibly be responsible, but he is. Seems he's invented a short range telporation device and whenever he wants to leave he just has his mean beam him out of the prison, and then back in before anyone notices he's missing..
The teleporting beam was also used free a convicted killer. Luther has the man who was once a humanfly climb a building to steal gems. When Jimmy discovers that a tv news van on the scene is actually being used by the gang, they abduct him. When Superman catches up with the van the crooks radio their headquarters for help. The van then explodes.
The scientific criminal master mind is refered to only as "Luthor" NOT "Lex Luthor".

Chapter 2, "The Atom Man Appears!", the two crooks teleported themselves and Jimmy out of the van before destroying it. Apparently Superman used his x-ray vision on the van, though he wasn't shown doing so, because he told Lois that the van was empty. At Luthor's hidden base Jimmy is introduced to the metal masked "Atom Man". Besides the short range teleporter Luthor has invented a long range transporter, the "Main Arch". The Atom Man tells Jimmy he plans to trap Superman in the machine, break him down into atoms then beam them into space. His first use of the machine, however, is to return Jimmy to the Daily Planet. He does this because Jimmy has no idea where the base is, and he wants Jimmy to take his challenge to Superman. In this episode Superman saves 100 of people from a burning cruise ship, 2 at a time. And Clark has started to pronounce Luthor as Lew-Thor, like everybody else. Jimmy gives Clark one of the Luthor gangs mysterious coins. Luthor orders the coin to be taken. Using a device which combines x-rays and tv signals Luthors men can see Lois getting into a safe. Prentending to be workers sent to fix wiring two men attempt to open the safe but are chased off by Clark and Perry. Perry opens the safe but the coin is gone. Clark realises that Lois had taken the coin out not put it in the safe. Now she's in danger. Lois being chased by bad guys drives her car through a sign warning of blasting. Superman saves Lois from the bomb and captures the goon, knocking there heads together, so they can't radio for teleport, and tying them up. He flies Lois back to the Daily Planet (Clark Kent's "dream" in previous serial, comes true) and uses his x-ray vision to identify what the mysterious coin is made of, there is one element he cannot identify. He keeps the coin. Luthor's aid tells Luthor that Superman has the coin. Luthor instead of being upset is pleased. He sets a trap for Clark Kent but story stealling Lois falls into instead. Here's where the plot starts not to make sense. They ask Lois for the coin back, even though Luthor knows Lois doesn't have it. Trying to fight off the goons Lois is pushed out a window, seemingly to her death. Chapter 3, "ABLAZE IN THE SKY!", Superman blocks the tv-xray rays sending it back into the machine, shorting it out, then saves Lois (unfortuantly). Luthor is paroled! "The Government" released him because he offered his x-ray/tv machine in exchange for his freedom. Lois said it was disgrace. (I think Lois is a disgrace). Perry sends Clark and Lois to interview Luthor. Luthor comments that the Daily Planet and Superman are probably not pleased at his being freed. Lois asks what his plans for the future are. He says he bought a tv studio. Two men claiming to be from a rival paper ask to take Luthor's picture. Clark x-rays the camera and sees a gun in it. He hits the camera man. The other guy pulls a gun but a prison guard steps in and the two men are captured. Luthor thanks Clark for saving his life, commenting that the grooks are probably after him for going straight. He invites Clark to visit his studio any time. Lois asks Clark how he knew a gun was in the camera. He says no real photographer would waist a flash on such a nice sunny day. (Flash bulbs back then worked once. I remember my first camera had one of those cube flashes which worked 4 times before you had to toss it). At his new tv studio Luthor tells his secretary, Miss Smith, that he is not in to anyone. After locking the office door he enters an elevator but instead of riding it, he rubs his magic coin and is teleported into his secret base. Superman had returned the coin to Perry White, who says he's going to have it analyised. Superman already did that, but oh well. Superman puts out an oil fire. Clark Kent faints from the gas fumes. Perry sends Clark, Lois and Jimmy on a plane trip, upstate, to a mineralogist. When smoke starts coming out of the engine Clark heads to the back of the plane to look for parachutes. Superman removes a smoke bomb from the wing. Clark returns to the cockpit with 2 (not 3) parachutes and asks what happend to the fire. Lois says Superman put the fireout while Clark was hiding. "I was not hiding", reponds Clark, standing up for himself for once. Three hoods beat the reports to the mineralogists. They lock him in his own vault. One wearing a bandage pretends to be the mineralogist but he gives himself away when he asks for the "activated" coin. Clark rips of his bandages. The other two hoods enter. Clark gets into a fist fight with them and is shot. Lois asks how come he isn't hurt. Clark claims the coin stopped the bullet. Lois asks to see it, commenting that if he's telling the truth it will be dented. (Should have kept her mouth shut). So, Clark uses his thumb to dent the coin. As he holds it out to Lois one of the hoods recovers, grabs the coin and runs off. Clark chases after him. The mineralogist unties himself and activates is very effective anti-theft device (not knowing innocent people are in his office). The office door slams shut and locks. Fire starts spraying out of the walls. Lois and Jimmy are trapped. "Next week at this theater: Superman Meets The Atom Man!"

Chapter 4, "SUPERMAN MEETS THE ATOM MAN", Clark knocks out a hood, then Superman saves Lois and Jimmy. The professor believing the attack on his lab was a puplicity stunt pulled by the reporters kicks them out, without looking at the coin.
The convicted killer, human fly, jewel theif from chapter 1 finally makes it to Luthor's lair, but he tries holding out on Luther and is sentenced to having his atoms jettisoned into space.
The staff of the Daily Planet has a birthday party for Lois (Clark secretly helps her blow out the candles).
Unfortunantly that's as far as I was able to get. Problem with the DVD. I'll ask seller for a replacement. So, it could actually be a week before I can continue.

He didn't get the name "Lex" until....oooh...late 50s-early 60s. He was just "Luthor" for the longest time.
There was an "Atom Man" (or "Atoman" as I've seen it spelled) on the Superman radio show, but he was totally unrelated to the one in the serial. He was a Nazi who had Kryptonite injected into his veins, or some such thing.

Back to where I left off (got replacement disc):
Perry White breaks up the party. Once he's out of the room Clark and Jimmy cut the cake and Lois looks at her gifts. One has no card to indenitfy who gave her the new bag. Lois finds a coin and as soon as she picks it up she vanishes!
Lois finds herself in the lair of the Atom Man who forces her to read into the radio a statement asking Superman and the police not to look for her, but Lois tosses the paper down and says they should go ahead and rescue her.
Clark ducks out of Perry's office into the file room. Superman flies into Perry's office, announces he has a plan to locate the Atom Man and rescue Lois and flies out again. Superman dicks up a large rock and hurls into the air. When it crashes to the Earth and explodes Clark Kent spreads the story that a meteorite which is a piece of Krypton has been taken to the Metropolis Musuem.
Luthor reading the story Luthor sends to of his men to get the kryptonite. Superman watches them take the rock.
Luthor orders Lois to be moved to "Cave Mountain". Then has one of his men phone Perry White to leave an anonymos tip that she's there. Superman over hears the phone call and flies off to "Cave Mountain" where he meets Atom Man. He tries his x-ray vision on Atom Man's helmet put its lined with lead (Did anybody really not know who Atom Man was?) Atom Man brags about having Kryptonite but Superman crushes the harmless rock into powder. Atom Man claims that if Superman move tries anything Lois will be vaporized. Superman lets himself be placed into the Main Arch. Atom Man flips switches and Superman vanishes. Atom Man flips switches on a different panel and Lois faints. Lois is carried to a car, supposedly to return her to Metropolis. One of Atom Man's goons sees Jimmy and the police coming so he gives the car a push and runs away. Of course the car heads off a cliff.

Chapter 5, "ATOM MAN TRICKS SUPERMAN", Superman rescues Lois then explains that his atomic structure is not effected by the Main Arch, and that he just moved so fast that the human eye couldn't see him. However, he later tells Perry White and the chief of police that the Main Arch did not work on him because it didn't have enough plutonium and suggests planting a story about plutonium being carried on a train.
Luthor reads the newspaper story about the plutonium but realises that its a trap. Never the less he sends his man Foster to attempt to steal the phony plutonium.
Perry assigns Clark and Lois to be on the train while Jimmy is to follow in a radio car. On the train Lois says she's keeping on eye on the detective carrying the "plutonium" and the other on Clark.
Foster knocks out the guy who sells cigarettes, candy bars, gum and magazines to the train rider, and takes his place. Clark uses his x-ray visuon to discover that they salesman is carrying a gun. He tries to escuse himself by saying he's thirsty but Lois follows him to the water dispenser. Clark tosses the water in Lois face then dases into the same cabin that the unconscious (or maybe he's dead) salesman is, removes his outer clothing and as Superman flies out the window then into the window of the other car. He subdues Foster, ties him up and carries him to Perry White's office where the chief of police is waiting.
When Foster pretends he was looking for money, knew nothing about plutonium Superman carries him out the window and tosses him into the air. He catches him and tosses him again. The line is "If you won't play ball with me, I'll play ball with you". Foster talks. He says his boss knew the plutonium story was a fake but sent him to distract the authorities while his boss really goes after a package at Central Station. He claims not to know what's in the package. When Foster is asked to identify his boss he says he can't do that. Taking no chances Luthor teleports Foster back to his hideout.
Superman heads to Central Station. Perry finally notices that Clark is missing. He sends Jimmy and Lois to Central Station.
At Central Station Superman uses his x-ray vision on several packages but he finds nothing except clothing and a box of nails. After Superman and a copy leave, two goons show up to claim the nails. When they open the box the nails glow. One of the goons, says that Superman's x-rays were so powerful that they changed the alloys in the nails into plutonium. Lois and Jimmy show up. Lois recognising the goons tells Jimmy to phone the office while she stall them. Aparently this time Jimmy didn't take the radio call, because he enters a phone booth to call Perry White. While he's on the phone Lois claims to be the roaming reporter and asks them "What is the kindest thing you ever did?" One replies, "Not bumping you off, Miss Lane" before he grabs her. Jimmy reports the goons presence to his editor. Perry starts to give instructions when Jimmy sees the goons drive off with Lois and hangs up. Clark who had returned to the office listens in to the phone call and sneaks out of the office again. Perry starts to complain to Clark about his "disappearing reporters" when he notices that Clark is gone too.
Coming to a crossroads, the henchmen turn right. Jimmy comes along and turns left. Lois is tied up inside an old barn. Jimmy realsising his mistake turns around, finds his way to the barn and drives right in. He exists his car to untie Lois, leaving the motor running. The goons come out of hiding and deck Jimmy then close and lock the barn doors so the reporter and photographer will die from carbonmonoxied poisoning.

Chapter 6 "THE ATOM MAN'S CHALLENGE", Jimmy wakes up and tries to turn off his cars engine, but is overcome by the fumes. Supemanr flying around uses his x-ray vision to see Jimmy and Lois in trouble. Landing, he crashes through the door and carries them out. Then flies away.
Luthor's men show up with the plutonium. Luthor opens the box. Just pretend that you don't know the radiation should kill them. The two men report the demise of Jimmy and Lois. Luthor contacts "truck 2" stationed by the Daily Planet building to confirm it. When he's told that Lois and Jimmy just entered the building five minutes ago, he sentences his men to "the Empty doom". They beg for mercy and Luthor agrees only to execute one. One of them says "I'll go". And Luthor rewards him for his bravery by vaporizing the other man instead. But a few seconds later, he brings Carl back. Threatening not to restore him after the next failure.
Luthor's new plan is to weaken Superman with synthetic Kryptonite, but he needs radium to activate it. He claims it will unnerve and confuse the police if they are told in advance of his plans.
Perry assigins Clark to cover a woman's convention, and to keep in constant contact by phone. He wants to know for once where Clark is. But before Clark can leave, the Atom Man transmits a warning, on the police band, that he will take control of all the radium in Metropolis and nothing can stop him. Perry, Clark and Jimmy hear the message. After Clark finds out that there are two major sources of radium in town, Perry sends him to cover the one, a hospital and Lois the other, a reduction plant (?). Jimmy is told to get photos of both places.
Two men claiming to be police officers show up at the hosptial, to move the radium to a safe place. The doctor in doesn't ask to see their badges just opens the safe and replaces a small box of radium with the fake box he was handed. Only then does he think to ask for "written authorization" but one of the goons decks him. Clark arrives after the crooks have driven off. He checks that the doctor is alright and after taking a call from Perry heads for the chemical plant.
At the plant the officer manager tells Lois they take every precaution and he's not worried about an attack on the plant, but an armored truck is supposed to pick up the radium today. Clark shows up. A phone call notifies the manager that the armored truck has been hijacked. Lois volunteers to carry the radium in her purse. Clark steps out of the room. The vault is opened and Lois given the radium. She sets out without Clark but runs back to the office when two men with a gaiger counter try to take the radium from her. They follow. Knock out the plant manager, take the radium from Lois and lock her in the vault. As they leave Jimmy arrives and tries to stop them. They knock him out and take him with them. Clark returns and seeing the manager on the floor ducks out to return as Superman. The manger recovers and tells Superman that he can't open the vault, only the plant manager has the combination and Superman can't force the vault because it release a poison gas, killing Lois. So Superman says "I'll have to use my special powers to discover the combination". Superman opens the vault then flies after the goons.
"Car 2" meets up with another car and transfers the radium and the now awake Jimmy to it. The other man makes Jimmy drive. Superman catches up with the first car. After learning the radium has been transfered he tears the engine out of the first car then flies after the second car. Jimmy is made to enter a bombing range. The first bomb droped from a plane nearly misses the car. Jimmy is told to stop and get out, but the guy hits him and jumps out. leaving him to be killed by the next bomb, which seems to destroy the car.

Chapter 7, "AT THE MERCY OF ATOM MAN!", Superman takes Jimmy out the car before the bomb hits it, and flies him back to the Daily Planet. Luthor teleports his man and the radium back to his lair. Lois and Jimmy try to explain to Perry what happened, both talking at the same time. He tells them to stop, and that only one should talk. Clark says that won't be neccesary and hands Perry the written story, scooping Lois again. Perry receives a phone call from the police informing him that before they vanished the two men Superman trapped in their car told the police that Luthor is working on synthetic Kryptonite. Perry tells Clark to right a story on it.
Luthor explains to his flunky, and to the audience, the origins of Superman, through flashbacks to the original serial. He says he knows Superman's origins from piece together reports from different astronomers and decoding Kryptonian messages beamed into space by Jor-El. Luther does not know that the child grew up as Clark Kent.
Luthor completes his synthetic Kryptonite and sends a cylinder containg some to his man inside the Daily Planet, because sooner or later Superman will show up there. Luthor's man, a janitor, hides the cylinder in the water cooler. Later, Clark Kent who left the office with Jimmy, returns to write his story. Feeling bad Clark goes for a drink of water and passes out. The janitor leaves the room to tell one of his buddies that Clark Kent must be Superman, but when they return Clark who had recovered, was gone. So the other crook concludes that Clark Kent is not Superman.
Back at the lair, Luthor determines that his man at the Daily Planet has to be removed. Superman will be at the launching of a new ship so Luthor plans to get him there.
The ship is named "Man of Steel" after Superman. Lois tells Superman that he shouldn't have come, he jokes that he's not worried with all these people to protect him. As Superman begins his speech a man makes his way to the front of the crowd and opens a small box. Superman colapses. A man claiming to be doctor examines Superman and says he needs to be taken to the hospital. Superman is taken away, in a fake ambulance.
Next: Into The Empty Doom
That ends the first DVD, is about half the serial, and I'm going to take a short break to watch some other things.

Chapter 8: INTO THE EMPTY DOOM! The fake ambulance takes Superman to the lair of Atom Man. Atom Man has Superman placed in the now plutonium energized Main Arch. Before he's sent into the empty doom, Superman promises "I'll be back!"
Lois and Jimmy report the disappearance of Superman to Perry White, who asks them to send Clark Kent in. Lois has trouble with her "new fangled typewiter". Jimmy plugs it in. Lois begins to write her story about the Man of Steel vanishing.
Two men stick up an armed car driver outside a bank. An insubstantial Superman appears, but has naving no physical form he can't stop the theives. Nor can he stop their getaway car. Although the audience can see him the thieves and police officers do not seem to notice him.
Back at the Daily Planet, editor Perry White has discovered that Clark Kent vanished when Superman did, and orders Lois to write a story saying suggesting that Clark Kent is Superman. Lois, suddenly developes a conscious and tells Jimmy that he's to see to it that the story is never published. As Lois is writing the story the phantom Superman appears and tries to rip it out of the typewriter. Can't do it. And again, only the audience sees him. Lois takes the vinished story to Perry White. The phone rings. Jimmy mimics Clark Kent, claiming to be on a story. Perry kills Lois' story and reasigns her to cover the robbery of a baby laundry. The phantom Superma appears in Perry's window to witness all this.
Lois sends Jimmy out to get hamburgers. Lois writes her new story. After she puts a new sheet of paper in the typewriter the machine starts working by itself. Superman is concentrating all his powers to leave a message for Lois. He asks her to contact the police and tell them how to get to the Atom Man's lair and flip the switch to bring him back from the empty doom. Lois of course, discreguards Superman's instructions to let the police handle it. The phantom Superman appears and tries to stop Lois and Jimmy but he can't.
As Lois pretends to need help with a broken down car, Jimmy sneaks up behind the Atom Man's goon. Jimmy gets down on all fours and Lois pushes the guard over. Then she hits him with her purse. Whatever is in there is heavy enough to knock the man out.
Lois and Jimmy enter the Atom Man's lair and are caught by the Atom Man. He offers them a chance to save Superman. He claims flipping one of two stiches will save Superman, flipping the other will seal his doom. Lois reaches for the top switch, but seening a grin on on the face of one of the Atom Man's goons, reaches for the second instead. The man smiles again so Lois histates. Then suddenly she flips both switchs. As sparks fly and smoke bellows the episode comes to an end.

The Daily Planet announces the disappearance of Superman to be a hoax. Luther hears a radio announcement that Superman will appear on television. He doesn't believe it saying he sent Superman to the empty doom. Odd, I thought it was the Atom Man who did that On tv Superman is seen capturing two crooks then announcing that he will soon capture the greatest criminal of all. Luther still thinks Superman is trapped in "channel 3" of the Main Arch. Lois and Jimmy pick up the "news reel" they used to fake the announcment. Luther sends one of his men into the empty doom, channel 3 to look for Superman. Luther leaves the beam active so he can bring his man back, but its Superman who escapes. Antother criminal tries to use the synthetic Kryptonite on Superman, but this artificial stuff looses its power over time. Superman tries to unmask the Atom Man but the Atom Man's head falls off. It was only a dummy. Superman breaks through the cave, flies to the Daily Planet fileroom and becomes Clark Kent once more. Kent tells Perry White that he was trapped in the empty doom by Atom Man and Superman saved him. Then he has idea to proove that Luther is the Atom Man. Were not told what the plan is, however.... After being accused by Perry of writing a false story which could get the paper sued, Lois quits. The story was actually Clark's but Lois begged him to let her put her name on it and Clark said nothing to Perry so Lois leaves angry at Perry and Clark. Lois gets a job at the tv station ran by Luthor. As Lois is attempting to do man and woman on the street interviews a robbery is in progress. Clark and Jimmy show up and try to be interviewed but she snubs them. When the burgler alarm sounds, Jimmy runs after the theives. Clark disappears. Lois "borrows" Clark's car. One of the robbers shots out a tire on the car. Lois loses control of the car and is saved from a crash by Superman who says "you can thank Clark Kent". As Jimmy chases the theives he attempts to cross railroad tracks and gets a foot cought between two rails, a train appears to be heading straight for him.

Luthor congratulations his men and a job well done, then returns to his tv studio office to talk with Lois Lane. He tells her he hopes the criminals using his tv trucks as destractions are caught and he will give any assistance he can. Once Lois is gone Luthor arranges for two men, not part of his gang to commit a roberry and be caught.
Lois shows up at the Daily Planet to tell Clark she thinks Luthor has gone straight. Clark tells her she shouldn't be there because someone one might learn her firing was a set up to plant her on Luthor. A man holding a gun bursts in. He wants money to not tell Luthor what he's offerheared and demands that Clark open the safe. Clark gets in a fight with the gunman and is knocked into Perry White's office (Perry isn't out). The gunman locks the door and decks Jimmy. When Jimmy is back on his feet, the man demands that he open the safe. Jimmy tries "I don't know the combination" but the gunman doesn't believe him. Superman appears. The gunman fires at him. Superman deflects a bullet into a light fixture sending it crashing down on the gunman's head. Superman leaves. As Jimmy stands guard of the gunman, Lois takes the keys, to check on Clark. Perry's office is empty. Clark climbs in the window, claiming he doesn't know how he got out on the ledge. Before returning to the tv station Lois tells Clark where the tv van will be next.
As Lois is conducting interviews Clark and Jimmy pull up. Luthor's man Foster and two non-gang members approach a payroll check cashing company trailer. The two men enter to rob it. Foster stays outside and radios the tv van. When the two theives try to leave they find the door is too hot to touch. Lois finishes her interviews. Clark and Jimmy are about to leave when the payroll man throws a wrench through the trailer window. As Foster dashs pat Lois, Jimmy and Clark run to the trailer. Jimmy touches the door and says "Ouch, that' red hot". Clark opens the door. Jimmy, Clark and the payroll man subdue the two theives and hand them over to a policeman. Then he opens both doors and carries Lois and Jimmy out. He tells a small crowd that they've been overcome by toxic gas, there's one more in there and to call an ambulance. Superman enters the building again, Clark Kent staggers out and colapses. Once three them of them have recoverted Lois, convince that Luthor has gone straight, returns to the tv truck, Clark and Jimmy to the Daily Planet.
Perry White thinks the capture of the two robbers proofs Luthor innocent but Clark thinks Luthor hired those men then let them get caught. Luthor's men using the tv-xray machine over hear the entire conversation and notify Luthor. Luthor announces he wants to make a statment to the press. Perry White sends Clark to get it. Luthor tells the press he has been working on scientific methods to fight crime and as a result has received threatening letters from the Atom Man. He shows them some. He says he will continue with his work. The papers on his desk burst into flame, other small fires start and then die out as a voice warns Luthor that he is in danger if he continues.
Back at the Daily Planet, Clark tells Perry White he's still not convinced. Perry sends Clark upstate to cover a flood. Luthor sends Lois.

Chapter 12, "ATOM MAN STRIKES!", Superman lifts the tv van into the air and sets it down on dry land. Superman and Lois discover the secret compartment. Superman warns Lois not to ask Earl, her cameraman about it. When Earl and the driver show up Superman leaves.
The tv station receives an award for best news broadcast of the year. Luthor promises Lois and Earl a bonus and gives them the day off. Then he radios his men to inform them that with Superman busy at the flood they can "clean up". The next morning he sends Lois to interview early risers, this is just a front to allow his gang to check out three stores they intend to rob. The x-ray/tv camera allows them to see safes being opened and write down the combinations. Later, Lois buys a copy of the Daily Planet with a headline about 3 baffeling robberies, all places the tv van stopped. She phones Clark to let him know, but he's still at the flood, so she tells Jimmy.
Clark standing a police car over hears a report of a fire nearing a building holding explosives. When he asks where the building is the officer tells him and offers to give him a lift but he says he has a car. Clark ducks behind some rocks. Superman put out the fire, and back in Metropolis, Clark writes the story. Jimmy tells clark about Lois' phone call.

Chapter 13, ATOM MAN'S FLYING SAUCER, the electric shock revives Superman who flies into Perry White's office, he says the danger is over. The thermol gun has in fact shorted out. Superman points out the suspcious truck as it pulls away. Perry phones the chief of police and arranges for a prowl car to pick up Jimmy and Lois and follow the truck. Superman heads for Luthor's ofice but he arrives too late, Luthor has teleported away.
The truck stops and the two men get out. The police car catches up with the truck, and despite Superman's warning not to get too near it, Lois and Jimmy approach it, followed by two police officers. Luthor's men radio in that someone is by the truck. Out of the air the voice of Superman is heard, warning Lois to get away from the truck. Lois, Jimmy and the two police officers get behind some rocks just in time, the truck explodes. As Superman approaches Luthor's men, they vanish.
Jimmy thanks Superman for the warning. Lois asks if there were explosives in the truck. Superman says no, a power beam was aimed at it, he could feel the vibrations in the air, and its still on so he can follow it back to its source. He instructs Lois and company to follow, then takes off.
Albert switched the beam off and Luthor's headquarters is lined with lead, so all Superman could determine is what hills it was hidden in. He returns to the Daily Planet building where he tells Perry White to have Clark Kent and Lois Lane flying over the hills while police officers in cars observe what happens. Lois finds Clark and takes him to the airport.
Luthor spots the Daily Planet's plain on his "viewer" screen. He launches a remote controled flying saucer to attack the plane. The saucer appears to strike the plane as Lois screams.
Theyy keep putting Atom Man in the titles even though Atom Man hasn't been seen since Superman knocked the head off the dummy.
On screen the title of this episode was "ATOM MAN'S FLYING SAUCERS" . The narrator pronounced it "saucer" and there was only one.

Chapter 14, ROCKET OF VENGENCE,Lois faints. Clark runs into the back of the plane. Superman runs to the fron of the plane, picks up Lois and jumps out, just before the saucer his the plane, destroying plane and saucer. When Lois wakes up Clark tells her Superman rescued the two of them. A police car pulls up and gives Lois and Clark a ride back to the airport.
Luthor uses a sonic generator to cause an small earthquake in Metropolis but the police chief refuses to call of the search so Luthor turns his sonic device on the Daily Planet building. Superman is able to hold the building together by blocking the beam at one point, but he tells Lois if Luther rapidly shifts the beam he won't be able to safe the building, so Lois gets the police chief to call off the search. Superman flies back to the hills to make a last search. Lois and Jimmy follow in a car. When their car approaches guard 1 the guard radios Luthor for instructions. He's told to let them pass. Luther calls guard station 3 and orders them to prepare the "atomitc projector" to take out Superman. The guards are about to grab Lois and Jimmy when Superman appears. They rush back to the atomic projector and fire a mortar shell at Superman. Superman catches it and hurls it back at the men as they run into a cave. The explosions is nothing like an atom bomb, good thing or it would have killed Jimmy and Lois. The two men survived but radio Luthor that they are trapped in the cave. He promises to get them out.
Luthor transmits a message over the police band, they because the search was not called off, he intends to use a rocket to destroy Metropolis. Superman landing by Lois and Jimmy hears a radio announcment about the rocket, urging citizens not to panic. Superman takes off again, this time to search for the rocket.
Lois says, "Let's get back to the office". Jimmy asks, "What for, to get hit by that rocket". Lois says they'll write the story even if its their last. Jimmy replies "Id rather read about it".
Luthor launches his rocket. Superman lands on it. From Perry White's office Perry, Jimmy and Lois can see the rocket. Perry says "Take a picture of it". Jimmy grabs a very camera but hands it to his boss saying "you take it", then Jimmy and Lois run out. Perry grabs the camera but then he too turns to run as the rocket comes nearer.
Note: Superman didn't see the rocket when it was on the ground because it was at a different location then the area where Luthor's base was hidden.

The conclusion of Atom Man vs Superman:
Chapter 15, SUPERMAN SAVES THE UNIVERSE, Superman turns the rocket so it lands in the ocean. Finally a mushroom cloud, in the story not just the extremly overlly dramatic opening credits. The radio announces the deflection of the giant atomic missile into the sea by Superman and refers to "Luthor, the Atom Man, self styled dictator who has declared war on the world". Luthor tells his men he will stop at nothing. When Albert asks "What about Superman" Luther says that although Superman may be physicall indestrucable he still posses the human weakness of sentimentality. When Albert says they can't use that to their advantage Luther, says "But we can, Abert, we can" and laughs.
A package is delivered to the Daily Planet for Lois Lane. When she opens the package Lois vanishes. She finds herself at Luthor's headquarters. Luthor informs her that she may soon be the only surviving female. He plans to use his nuclear fission cyletrone to create massive Earthquakes destroying the Earth. When Lois says he can't do that without destroying himself he points out his space ship. When she says he can't stop Superman, Luthor says Superman won't do anything as long as she is his hostage. Luther than has Albert and Bear take off in the spaceship. Telling them to wait for further orders in orbit.
Luthor announces over the police band radio that he has Lois Lane and that he will destroy the eastern portion of the city. At noon at earthquake strikes. Perry and Jimmy hide under Perry's desk. Clark heads for the file room. Superman rescues a few people then over hears a police radio call, the police believe they have located the Atom Man's hideout. Superman takes off. He meets two police men who tell him several farmers saw a protectile take off. Superman tells the officer to "follow me". One of Luthor's men reports that cops are coming and Superman is with them. Luthor orders his last two men to use the cycletrone to create a shockwave, but saying it this close range it would bring down the cave they refuse so he does it himself. As piece of the cave cieling start falling in the men jump Luthor but breaks away, grabs a gun and makes them stand against the wall as he radios the ship to bring him and Lois aboard. Holding Lois in one hand, Luthor holds a coin in the other. Luthor and Lois vanish. The two men search Luthor's desk for synthetic Kryptonite, but when Supermean breaks into the cave he informs them that it has lost is power. After asking where Luthor and Lois are Superman knocks the crooks heads together then takes off.
Luthor orders more speed to escape Superman, but Superman catches up with rocket, enters it, grabs Lois and Luthor and flies out. The rocket explodes, killing Albert and Bear. Superman flies into Perry White's office, put handcuffs on Luthor and tells Perry to return him to jail, and this time keep him there. Perry smiles.
Later, Lois and Clark are called into Perry's office. A piece of synthetic Kryptonite has been found and Perry wants Lois and Clark to destroy it. Clark doesn't want to handle it. Lois opens the box. Clark looks at it says "it looks like a cinder doesn't it." When nothing happens to Clark, Lois is surprised. Clark says "You thought I was Superman?" When Lois admits she did but since it had no effect on him she must be wrong, Clark says "well it is synthetic you know". But Lois is now convinced Clark is not Superman. Clark actually sounds disappointed when Lois says she doesn't believe Clark is Superman. Clark, Lois and Jimmy leave Perry's office. Perry reaches into his pocket, finds a match, to light his cigar. As the match flares up the screen fades to black and then "THE END" appears.
