I watched the Billy Zane The Phantom movie last week and have to admit it was quite good. I seem to remember trying to watch it when it first came out and not liking it, but times and tastes change. I thought the creators of the movie showed a real inspired love of cliffhangers.
Unfortunately I can't say much about the Tom Tyler serial. I'm slogging along through the episodes but it's a bit of a chore. For one thing Tyler's Phantom is very inept, which is probably more realistic for a person who doesn't know the jungle that well and has only just become The Phantom, but it's annoying that he has to be saved by his servants and dog all the time. And the cliffhangers aren't terribly inspired. Also, Tyler has the most annoying voice I've ever heard in entertainment of any media, outside of maybe Doc Dart the singer for the 80s punk band The Crucifux.
Haven't seen Capt Marvel yet but it sounds like they did a good thing by not having Tyler's Marvel say much in the serial.
Can't wait to finish The Phantom so I can get to my next "must see" serial, which is The Fighting Devil Dogs, featuring the prototype for Darth Vader; The Lightning!

sadly, my review of "The Phantom" serial was over at EZ board and is forever wiped from history, it appears.
i liked it, but not as much as the movie. it was really nice to get it on disc though, after watching it through muddy mulit-gen dubs.
i'll have to pick up that serial as well, the Devil Dogs!

As a big Phantom-Fan and Tom Tyler-Fan I like both versions! Tom Tyler was also a Wrestler and Bodybuilder, so he left people and a tree really himself without any tricks in "ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL" and people in "THE PHANTOM"! Even William Witney said if he made Captain Marvel again he would have used a clone of Tom Tyler! I hope there will be soon a new Phantom-movie!

I didn't realize that the Fire Goddess sub-plot in The Phantom serial was based from the comics until I found this collectionof Ray Moore's sunday strip. Pretty neat! Moore BTW is my favorite Phantom artist, I'm hoping one day to have all of his different Phantom comic serials collected. I read somewhere recently that Lee Falk felt that Billy Zane was the perfect actor for the Phantom.

i think i read that as well. i liked Zane a lot, and he was able to be dark and mysterious and yet still smile as the hero, something that seems to be anathema to most "heroes" these days.
that was a lot of fun to read! and pretty close to what they did in the serial with it. good stuff!

Interesting news. Since comics always go through adaptations and re-adaptations it doesn't bother me as it's not a remake:
If Batman can do it, why not The Phantom?
Sydney-based production company Sherlock Symington Productions has secured rights to "The Phantom: Legacy", a new feature film involving the jungle-based masked hero who famously dressed in skin-tight purple reports the The Associated Press.
The property was previously adapted by director Simon Wincer in 1996 and starred Billy Zane. This is NOT a sequel to that, rather a reboot of the franchise ala "Batman Begins" and "The Incredible Hulk".
The $87 million project, penned by Tim Boyle, will focus on "the Father/Son relationship, and what it means to be The Phantom," scriptwriter Tim Boyle said in a statement. "The film will be set in the present day and will deal with the concept of destiny."
Bruce Sherlock, who served as executive producer of the first "Phantom" movie, will return as producer on this.
Shooting will take place entirely in Australia with production set to begin within six to nine months. Several "top talent" Australian and American actors are in talks for roles in the project.

Hmmm, I don't know if this production is related to the one it the article above, but it is a mini series showing on syfy next year. It doesn't look very good. www.youtube.com/watch?v=X74WvxfvyM4&I can't really say that they are doing to The Phantom what they did to Flash Gordon without actually seeing it first, but this trailer isn't making me too hopeful.

I own the serial and don't really like it. Starts off slowly, gets somewhat decent in the middle but the finish is just terrible.
