with ERB there, it seems like this would be the closest Tarzan to the pulps we would ever get. the serial is in PD, so there are a ton of versions out there, but the Roan DVD is probably the best one (based on the other serials they've done). i'm looking forward to this one!

apparently Tarzan is going to South America...? this Tarzan also speaks fluent English, a nice change from what we usually get.
Ula Vale is making an expedition to find her fiance', who has some plans that are very valuable. she doesn't want them to fall into unscrupulous hands.
Tarzan saves 3 people looking for him from a lion attack. one man tells the story of a plane crash in Guatemala of Paul Darnot, the man who brought Tarzan to civilization and established him as Lord Greystoke. Tarzan promises to find Darnot if he's alive.
on the voyage over, he joins forces with Maj. Martling, who is searching for Ula's fiance'. the villains are also on board, searching for Martling's translation of the Mayan scroll.
once in Guatemala, Tarzan faces aligators as he swims ahead to find the documents. the villains kill a native and steal a boat, enraging said natives. naturally when our heroes show up the natives hang Ula over a leopard pit. Tarzan jumps in to rescue her! he throws one of the leopards out, which then menaces our other heroes. but he "tells" it to chase the natives away.
Tarzan then tracks the villains to the ancient Mayan ruins, and their party is attacked by a new band of natives! Tarzan battles mightily, but there are too many of them and he is overcome. the natives are told by Queen Maya to hurl our heroes into a croc pit! she will spare Tarzan's life if he will become her consort. he refuses since she won't spare the lives of the others. Tarzan gets put on the sacrifial alter!
next- Crossed Trails
there's no "Cheetah" in this serial, it's the correct N'Kima name for the monkey.

Also Tarzan doesn't do the Johnny Weissmuller, Carol Burnett yodel. He does the Ooooohbomongoneeee yell.
I have the Treeline Films version which is definately not in great shape.
One thing I'm curious about... in the version I have, the first ep starts off with a fortune teller type of thing where they sort of preview one of the first big action scenes. I'm not sure if it's actually supposed to be edited that way or if it's a weird touch that Treeline (or whoever got ahold of this version) did on their own.

wow, the Raon is definately the way to go- better sound and picture quality! i don't have that intro on either version, that's for sure.
Maya spares Tarzan at the last moment, and then some of the gang steal the idol, causing a panic! Tarzan is set free and clubs a bunch of natives. a huge strangely shot battle occurs, until our heroes break out a gatling gun and mow down the natives.
Tarzan gets knocked out by one of the thugs, but then Raglan doesn't kill him. later there is much discussion about the map. Raglan plans on using some dynamite to stop our heroes, using the old 'trip wire trap'. George then trips the wire- kaboom!
next- The Devil's Noose

Ula Vale, following both parties, hears the explosion. everyone has survived the explosion, but since they can't find Tarzan they think the 'gators got him.
however, he swims out and yells, and Ula shows up to help. Nkima tells Tarzan about the smoke coming from a "crack in the Earth". Ula and Tarzan dig there.
meanwhile, Raglan has lost his stolen code book, so he can't open "the Lost Goddess". they hide the Goddess in a deserted shack. he then overhears our heroes discussing the code book that the Major had found. later on, Tarzan and the Major discuss the possible African origin of the Goddess.
that night Raglan clubs the Maj and takes the book. Ula follows him to the shack, but gets knocked out and a fire starts. Tarzan runs to the burning the shack, but steps into a rope trap and gets knocked out and hung up in a tree!

Tarzan quickly regains consciousness and rescues Ula. Raglan runs off with the idol. Tarzan sets off to follow and find him. Raglan hops a riverboat and escape Tarzan's dogged pursuit.
Tarzan wants D'Arnot to head back to civilization. Ula will stay with our heroes. a steamer picks them up and takes them to a town in Panama, where they scour the city for Raglan.
much tomfoolery with George and the Major ensues, but Tarzan finds Raglan eventually. naturally a fight breaks out. then Tarzan gets pitched off the balcony!

Tarzan survives the fall, no bones broken or anything. Raglan has taken off, but Tarzan got the code book. Raglan is hitting the trail to Quiriqua. that's where the ancient Mayan ruins are!
our heroes set off to find the thugs, and George forgot to pack food. Ula comes up with the great idea to separate to help search.
while Tarzan is searching, he helps a deer with an injured paw/hoof. he also has to battle what appears to be a mountain lion. after defeating it he gives the ape call, and lets everyone in the area know he's nearby. he then drops in on Raglan's men, right after they say he's as dead as a mackeral. naturally a fight ensues, and Tarzan gets stabbed?
next- Fatal Fangs

well, i can see i've been inspired to watch this one a lot... i blame the Ultraman and Pinky and the Brain DVD sets.
the villains spare Tarzan to get info from him. bad idea. they tie him to a tree, but he manages to use his muscles to break the ropes and escape. he tricks the villains and a battle breaks out.
after he beats them they use the "we were just obeying orders" routine. Tarzan spares them. they can't tell him where Raglan is. Tarzan tries to rescue George from a leopard and gets stuck in a tiger trap!
next- Flaming Water

all the spikes completely miss Tarzan and he escapes. George has now squealed for 6 minutes straight. i'd have left him. Tarzan leads them to where Raglan has the Goddess, but he's gone already. Nkima spies on Ula Vale while she takes a shower, she's quite cute with her hair down. Raglan kills one of Ula's porters to protect his Goddess. she goes to search for the porter. meanwhile, at the Lost City, the head Priest is exhorting the people to go retrieve their stolen idol. they go out dressed in black hoods. they find Tarzan and he has to battle them. he warns the rest of the party. the prof drops his code book into the water and Tarzan jumps in to retrieve it, but the current is too strong and he is swept over a waterfall! next- Angry Gods

Ula sees Tarzan fall, but he survives, and her porters rescue him right before the gator gets there! while that happens our other heroes are accosted by the Black Hoods.
Tarzan heads out after them, once he recovers. Ula also heads toward the Dead City. Martling is told he must produce the Goddess or die. Nkima leads Ula to a cave, then gets scared and runs away. the Black Hoods menace Ula!
next- Doom's Brink

Ula is captured and put in a cell. Nkima goes to Tarzan and tells him the rest of the party are prisoners in the Dead City, and away he goes.
Raglan waits impatiently at the Cantina Del Toro for news from his accomplice. he's gonna lay low.
as Tarzan approaches the Dead City, Nkima warns him of the trap of the Black Hoods. Tarzan fights furiously, but there's a plethora of natives to take on, and eventually he succumbs to the sheer numbers of them. he is sentenced to an unknown fate, while Martling and George are taking to the torture chamber.
Ula is shown Tarzan being menaced by a lion. she battles the old woman jailkeeper. the lion's chain breaks and it attacks Tarzan!next- Secret Signals

Ula digs through the cell wall and has Tarzan hop over to her so she can cut his bonds. then the lion attacks. they wrestle around for a while together before Tarzan kills the lion. how'd an African Lion get to South America? the director does a good job of hiding who is playing with the lion, though.
Tarzan and Ula escape by wearing the Black Hoods, and while rescuing Martling and George a fight breaks out. they escape though! Lopez returns with news of Raglan, who is waiting in Mantique.
naturally, the party gets there while Tarzan is swinging through the jungle, and they foul up, letting Raglan know they are after him. they give chase in a Model A, or T, or something ancient and Tarzan engages the sailors of the boat in a fist fight on the docks. Raglan BLASTS Tarzan with his gun!next- Death's Fireworks

Tarzan leaps at Raglan before the gun goes off and smacks him around. he locks himself in a room to escape Tarzan's fury. the group shows up and the plan to open the Goddess right away. George is all excited!
they have to wait in Mantique for a week, so what ship do they end up chartering? yep, the villains. Tarzan has to find Nkima, and Ula needs to make some preparations.
once aboard, Tarzan has some misgivings about the captain- he's "a shade too nice." Raglan and the Captain make plans and the Captain won't let Raglan kill them since he's bungled so much already.
of course, a storm hits the boat. Ula sees Raglan before she turns in. this greatly annoys the Captain, who shoots Raglan. then the storm gets really bad, and sweeps most of the crew overboard!
last episode- Operator #17

the storm breaks, but the party is on a tiny raft with no food or water. George remains an idiot. they are spotted by a ship and rescued.
back at Greystoke Manor, Tarzan has a Gypsy party. Tarzan's guests want to hear about his recent adventure, but they all beg off. on old Gypsy woman gazes into her crystal ball and we see a flashback of story. then "old Mag" turns out to be Ula, and she decides to destroy the formula!
then George wants to know when it's time to eat! Ula and Tarzan exchange words of gratitude.
the end
overall, decent, but 12 chapters is stretching it. the local is good, and the story is decent. Bennett cuts a dashing Tarzan and his acting improves as the serial progresses. some nice miniature work as well. Ula is a hottie, once she lets her hair down. there's not a mention of Jane at all, which is a bit odd. and what is with this last chapter being 15 minutes of flashback? yeesh.
