the original "Perils of Pauline" was a big budget serial that ran at least 20 episodes in 1914. it's very famous.
they run out with a rickshaw before the bombs destroy the tomb.
Bashan captures Pauline and wants the half disc. Prof. Hargrave fills Bob (and us) in on the reasons Bashan is after the disc. Bob goes out to look for Pauline.
she gets away and they go off to look for the lost city. Bashan's men use a gunboat to chase them.
somehow they get aboard Bashan's boat, and the storms hits as a fight breaks out. the tiny ship was tossed and then Pauline gets swept overboard!

they reach the Temple and are greeted by the natives. they give the natives presents (no radios or smokes, though).
Pauline and Bob head out for the temple in the morning. they find it and the second half of the disc. as they leave lots of animals show up, including a herd of monkeys.
Pauline runs back to the village, and right into Bashan's clutches!

Pauline saves her father and Willie from the flames. later the party gets into a plane to try to get to the city faster than Bashan. Bob wants to drop bombs on the good doctor!
the plane has some engine trouble and they are forced to land. Pauline goes to the native village to check it out. Bashan and his party are being watched by apes. Pauline reports the villains to Bob, who goes to ambush them.
the ambush works! but as Pauline returns to the plane, a group of natives follow her. she runs into a cave, but a tiger follows her in.
a tiger? aren't they native to India?

Bob runs into the lair and chases the tiger off with several poorly placed shots. our heroes then leave in the plane. there they find out that Pauline didn't get the true half of the other disc.
Fang unties Bashan, who then get captured by the natives. our heroes, feeling generous, and needing a villain for five more chapters, drop a hand grenade to help our villains out.
our heroes take a steamer up the river to Singapore, while Bashan meets an old friend (Fu Manchu?) who helps him with a plane.
the hotel our heroes stay at has man eating sharks in their pool. one of Bashan's female assistants is looking through Pauline's gear for the discs. Pauline finds her, and a catfight breaks out! Bob rushes to help and Bashan's men show up, and a fistfight breaks out. Bob and Pauline take a header into the pool!

they get to the ruins without mishap. Bashan plans to let our heroes find the other disc, and then take it from them. they find a plaque that tells them (inadvertantly) that the other half of the disc is in New York!
Pauline goes to investigate a noise, and Bob goes with her. Willie feels like something is alive in the ruins. Bashan shows up to take the disc and a fight breaks out. as Bob and Pauline walk away, they trip a trap door and fall into a watery pit!

Prof. Thompson introduces them to the Indian Consul Haggins, who has freed Bashan. naturally Bashan is at the museum thieving the other half of the disc.
Willie falls into a vat of white paint, and staggers about. Bob gets clocked by the bad watchman. Hargrave finds the other half of the disc, but it's in an urn. Bashan reveals himself and a fight breaks out. Bashan's men grab Pauline. Willie scares them off accidentally. Pauline gets the vase and runs to the car, but falls...

Bob breaks a window and he and Pauline yell for help. they get out with Hargrave's help. he then later finishes making the formula, just as Bashan arrives with his men. naturally, a fistfight breaks out (this is the best fight in the serial).
Bashan breaks the glass vial with the gas in it, and both he and Fang are completely disintegrated. no one is sad.
Bob and Pauline discuss their future in the garden. big kiss!
comment: well, i liked whatever movie version i saw of this when i was a kid, and thought this would be more exciting. it is to a degree, and possibly because the print isn't hot (Alpha and all) it didn't really hold my attention too much. Sonny Ray must have been a comedian, but he's more annoying than anything (tendering his resignation is a running gag). he screams constantly.
and being spoiled by Republic Serial fights... these are awful.
it was worth the $5, i guess.
