i've never seen a Rin Tin Tin movie or serial, and have heard good things about this one. looking forward to it! here's the synopsis from the back of the DVD:
Synopsis The town of St. Suzanne is being terrorized by Indian raids. The marauding natives are led by a masked spectre known as "The Wolfman." When a government agent is murdered while investigating the crisis, his brother, Allen Scott, soon discovers that the town harbors many secrets. At the center of this swirling cyclone of suspicion and violence is young Jimmy Carter, the recently orphaned son of the owner of the Carter gold mine. As Scott investigates the mysterious "Wolfman," he and Jimmy are repeatedly rescued by Rin-Tin-Tin, "THE LIGHTNING WARRIOR."
This action-packed serial was the final screen appearance by the world's first great animal superstar. Rescued as a pup during WWI from the blasted battlefields of France and brought to America, "Rinty" made his first film in 1923 and was an international star within three years, earning over $6000 a week at the peak of his career. One year after appearing in THE LIGHTNING WARRIOR, Rin-Tin-Tin passed away as neighbor Jean Harlow cradled him lovingly during his final moments. The film franchise started by this wonder-dog continued and later moved to TV, starring descendants he sired, with his bloodline continuing to this day.

phantom drums are heard but the source is unknown. the whites must leave the district by the "new moon". the Sheriff goes out to find out if it is the legendary Indians. Jimmy and his daddy also hear the drums. their canoe is tipped over and Jimmy's father is severely injured.
Jimmy goes to a cabin to get help and meets Rinty, who later chases "The Wolf Man". Rinty already has a rep about being really smart, and the posse is led back to Alan Scott's cabin.
Indian George is in trouble and Jimmy has the sheriff looking for his father, who has disappeared. Rinty shows up to comfort him. the Wolf Man tells his men there's a clue in the dog's collar. later on Jimmy's father is found, dead.
later, Alan Scott confides his secret in Jimmy about his brother, the g-man. later on, we meet Dianne's real father, Indian George, who's in jail. she overhears, and her "father" pleads his case with her. she frees him and tells here where he will be hiding (in the old mine, of course).
the Indians begin their attack!

Dianne's father is LaFarge. d'oh!
Dianne is in a wagon headed toward the Indian attack (it's of course, out of control). Alan rescues her just in time. they see the Wolf Man and Alan heads out after him. he loses him, but runs into the sheriff and hands Dianne (pronounced DEE-Anne) over to him.
later some ranchers go to town to stop the others from leaving from the Indian attacks. the townspeople start turning on each other in the meeting.
Alan gets captured by the Indians and tied to a horse. the Wolf Man wants the report in Rinty's collar. while looking for the sheriff, Frankie- i mean, Jimmy sees Alan and rescues him with his lariat.
Alan then chases the Wolf Man onto an elevated mine cart, and Rinty leaps on to battle him as well- until Alan falls off!

the deputy then gets a letter that tells him Scott is the villain. Jimmy is found by the Wolf Man and doesn't want him to tell the sheriff about the dead messenger. they get Jimmy and head out after Scott. they plant evidence on Scott to frame him as the Wolf Man, and the townspeople want BLOOOOOD!

Rinty throws a rope down to Jimmy and saves him from the cliffside (with help from the horse). Alan won't let the sheriff get killed, but right before they can hang Scott Jimmy rides up and tells them what happened.
another arrow appears and an Indian is caught. they find the note in Rinty's collar, and eventually Hayden is named as the Wolf Man. of course, La Farge has put Hayden's name on the paper for revenge, but that nearly backfires.
Rinty is in a wagon that Alan tries to save, but it goes over a cliff!

the Wolf Man steals the evidence against Hayden. Alan pulls the ol' switcheroo with a brave and see LF about to be burned at the stake. then he gets captured and it's up to Rinty and Jimmy to save them. which he does, but the Indians are hot on their trail.

Hayden saves Alan. Jimmy tells them he saw McDonald, and they find him alive. the Indians are signaled to strike!
they head out after the Sheriff. another scuffle follows, and we find out it's McDonald who is the Wolf Man. now our heroes must stop the Indians, which leads to several impressive scenes. then REAL Indians show up, proving the attacking tribe is white men disguised as Indians. the real Indians return to their Hidden Valley.
everyone is cleared from all the past misdeeds. McDonald found out there was a rich vein of gold running through the valley, and plotted to get the settlers out. Jimmy offers half his mine to La Farge. Jimmy pretty much blackmails Alan into marrying Dianne.
the end!
review- well, it was not the best. i blame print quality for a lot of it, since i missed a bunch of stuff when it was too dark to see what was going on. the way they got the erased name back was pretty cool though. worth a look to see Rin Tin Tin in action. the final Indian raid is pretty well staged.
