i really liked this the first time i saw it. watched again about a year and a half ago and nearly fell asleep. it's not the worst of the second series, but Ghidorah looks awful and the plot is all over the place.

This was just OK at best,it wasn't as bad as Space Godzilla but it wasn't greatt either. The time travel parts were pretty convoluted and not well thought out. I would have rather seen the aliens from planet X than the future guys that were behind it. Why did they feel the need to replace Ghidorah's alien sounding warble with Rodan's roars? King Ghidorah himself looked ok except for the oversized heads with the blank expressions.

The film was nearly ruined by the cheap dog fight Ghidorah has with the jets. However the Godzilla Ghidorah were the best ever filmed.

I also liked this alot when it first came out, but like most of the Heisei films, it's lost alot of it's former appeal for me. Ghidorah's redesign is not very good-yeah the suit is much larger and Ghidorah is taller than Godzilla, but he's very skinny and the necks are much too thin. Kawakita's lazy and sloppy effects start here with Ghidorah's wobbly horns and far too slow flying speeds in many scenes. The storyline is also badly handled with the dopey T3 rip-offs , ridiculous "Major Speilberg" ("Take that you dinosaur!"-one of my favorite lines of dialogue ever!) and convuluted time traveling. With a little work, the story could have been excellent too, which is the real shame of this movie! I would however have preferred Ghidorah to remain an alien beast and to have kept his original uluating alien sounding roar, gravity ray sound effects and that unearthly ringing noise when he flew. That being said, the battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah is spectacular and one of the best fight scenes Toho ever turned out. For once both monsters are trying to kill each other and, while there is alot of ray blasting, it's handled well and logically here -Ghidorah is a definite "striker" style fighter rather than a grappler like Godzilla-and lots of hand to hand copmbat is also used. Unlike later Heisei movies which would be little more than ray exchanges for fights, I always thought this one had some impact. Of course, the other great thing that this movie did was kick off the still continuing endless parade of Bandai Godzilla toys!! Not to mention the hundreds of expensive vinyl and resin model kits, books, etc. etc!!! But best of all was the brand new score by Maestro ifukube that featured absolutely splendid versions of both Godzilla and Ghidorah's classic themes alongside some great new music.

Truthfully, I was deeply disappointed by this movie. For me, the plot is just a narrative mess. At least movies like "Godzilla vs. Megalon" were straightforward.
I hated how that changed the origins of Ghidrah, and heck, the monster has not looked good since 1968 with DAM. Here he was just a big stiff and not as menacing as previous versions.
The best thing about this movie was the return of Yoshio Tsuchiya!

I remember being really excited about this coming out. Being before the advent of consumer level internet, like with Biolante it was exciting tracking down any sort of news on it. The summer before it came out I was in San Francisco and hung out at Kinokuniya a lot looking for any type of tokusatsu books, etc. I have a couple of nice pocket books from there about GvsKG and a general history of the series up to that point.
The other significant thing I remember is several US news reports about this particular movie being anti-American I suppose because of the WWII timetravel stuff, the navy "killing" Godzilla, etc. Which was completely ignorant as it was more a critique of Japan's issues with capitalism than anything else.
Saw the movie shortly after it came out on Japanese VHS as a friend sent it to me. It's probably one of those movies that if you don't fully get what's going on, it seems better than it is.
I actually still like this one more than most of the Heisei stuff. Biolante, GvsKG and Destroyer about about it for what I can happily watch. I've still never seen Destroyer with subs.

We're packing and getting ready to move back to San Francisco. While looking through the archives I found this....
