this is a pretty good movie. sadly it and the two sequels (and the director) have been endlessly overhyped by drooling fanboys who can't stand anyone saying Kaneko is not the best monster movie director ever which can take some of the fun out of the movies.

I liked the first of the series quite a lot. It was a breath of fresh air after a decade of ponderous and stiff Toho monster movies. A very spunky pacing with great effects and nice straight forward story. I liked the sort of mystical/scifi origins presented in this one.
The next two didn't do it for me as I felt they got too convoluted in story and plot/sub plots.

Shonokin, you took the words right out of my mouth. The movie was indeed a breath of fresh air! This was a Japanese giant monster movie that I had been waiting for a long time, but Toho never delivered.
The viewpoint once again came from the every person perspective, (like the Showa series) rather than from the military and thankfully, no need of a mecha here. And it was great to see the monsters not the big, lumbering stiffs we were use to seeing with Toho's creations.
Yes, Kaneko has been overpraised, but I think he certainly delivered here, and I rather take him than say Kazuki Omori any time!
And of course, special props to Shinji Higuchi, who certainly surpassed his old teacher Kochi Kawakita, and I believe he had an even smaller budget to work with than Toho's Godzilla movies, which is truly amazing. I really think it was Higuchi who took Japanese effects to the next stage (the Millennium series seemed to have taken his cues).
My only debit with the movie was that both Kojiro Hongo and Akira Kubo had way too small roles.

Gamera has never looked better before or since . I loved this Gamera suit. It had the right balance of looking more like a realistic turtle along with incorporating the classic Gamera. I don't know why they started messing with his look in the sequels. The low camera angles and natural outdoor lighting in some scenes really went a long way towards believability in the effects. The only thing I missed in this movie was the Gamera March. Too bad they couldn't have included it as the end theme or something.
