Mazinga Z (1972-1974, 92 episodes)
Hiroya Ishimaru ... Kôji Kabuto (voice) Osamu Katô ... Duke Gorgon (voice) Haruko Kitahama ... Baron Ashura (Female) (voice) Minori Matsushima ... Sayaka (voice) Hiroshi Ôtake ... Boss (voice) Kazuko Sawada ... Shiro Kabuto (voice) Hidekatsu Shibata ... Baron Ashura (voice) Junpei Takiguchi ... Count Brocken (voice) Isamu Tanonaka ... Mucha (voice) Kousei Tomita ... Dr. Hell (voice) Jôji Yanami ... Prof. Yumi (voice)
since i am watching an English dubbed version (William Ross, i believe) of the first four episodes, i'm kind of on a Mazinga kick. i know it's spozed to be "MazingER Z" but since i was introduced to the series as "Mazinga" that's what it's gonna be. we won't be mentioning the "Tranzor Z" version much, i reckon.

it's a violent, sexy and funny cartoon. how did Prof. Kabuto not suspect someone named Dr. Hell might turn evil?
while i love the first series the most, i do actually prefer the design of Great Mazinga, since i owned about four different versions of that "Shogun" Warrior.
this UK version is pretty faithful, and has an English sung by Isao Sasaki, which is a bit different than the other English version i have, sung by i think Masato Shimon. a great song in any language!

I never realized Manzinger was a Shogun Warrior until I was in my twenties. I always wanted but never got any of those toys, but my first introduction to this was Tranzor Z which for sentimental reasons I love.

Along with MACROSS, Mazinger is my favorite anime series of all time. There is a new series currently airing in japan that looks pretty cool-it's basically a remake of the original series with the character designs similar to the ones used in the MAZINKAISER OVAs, which were based on Go Nagai's versions from the manga. I have to be honest and say that i prefer the original Toei series designs over Nagai's. Nagai is a great designer, but not a terribly good artist. I always felt Toei took his ingenious designs and refined them. Still, it's great that the best of all super robos is back on TV.
