This is a continuation of my favorite toku directors(I'll get to Kazuho Mitsuta, Ryuta Tazaki, and a number of others soon) This weeks directors are Akio Jissoji and Hajime Sato (I'm going to do one on Keita Amemiya soon since he is fresh on the brain having just watched his entire catalogue this week)
Akio Jissoji:
Definitely one of my all time favorite directors, his avant-garde/surrealist style really appeal to me. He was a supervisor on Ultra Q, became director on Ultraman, Ultraseven(in which he directed the infamous banned episode which is a great piece of filmmaking, it's a shame that shows like Ultraseven,Operation:Mystery! and Mirrorman aren't in the sci-fi hall of fame),Mighty Jack, Operation:Mystery!, Tokyo: The last megalopolis, Ultra Q the Movie, 2 episodes of ultraman tiga and some eps of Shin Operation:Mystery, Ultra Q Dark Fantasy. His last project was "Die Silbemaske" in 2006 a redo of the 1971 Silver Kamen which Jissoji created and directed. It is one of my all time fave SF series.
Hajime Sato
Sato-san didn't get to do much in his short career but what he did was great. "Ghost of the Hunchback"(1965) is an ultra-rare haunted house story that is super creepy and is extremely Bava-esque as is all his work, ecspecially his masterpiece "goke Bodysnatcher from Hell"(1968)which is a great character study about paranoia and the breakdown of order, loss of humanity etc. "Terror Beneat the Sea"(1966) is a great underwater adventure, the lab scenes are moody and atmospheric and the gill-men are cool as well! The Golden Bat is nice over the top wacky adventure. See Ya next time. Leave your thoughts!!!
P.S. August, I could use your wisdom!
