and a lot of uncredited US Marines playing US Marines
A tough as nails Marine sergeant John Stryker puts his squad of green recruits through harsh training, which ends up saving their lives during the invasion of Tarawa. Only three of his men are killed. Three new recruits and more training follows before the battle of Iwo Jima.
Considered by many to be the best movie about WWII, John Wayne did not originally want to do it. One of John Agar's first films. Made after the war the film was produced to save the Marines. Congress was considering shutting down the Marines assuming this branch of the US military was no longer needed (how nieve). The making of documentary (1993) on the DVD features most of the main actors accept of course for John Wayne and Forest Tucker (both deceased).
Three of the men who raise the US flag were the men who actually did it (Rene A. Gagnon, Ira H. Hayes and John H. Bradley). The flag used was the actual flag, loanded by and returned to the US Marine Corps Museum.
I liked it but I wouldn't say it was the best war movie or John Wayne's best part.
Pfc. Al Thomas: That's war, boy.
Pfc. Charlie Bass: What's war?
Pfc. Al Thomas: Trading real estate for men.
