The Return of Dracula (1958) aka The Curse of Dracula
Francis Lederer - Count Dracula, posing as Bellac Gordal Norma Eberhardt - Rachel Mayberry Ray Stricklyn - Tim Hansen Jimmie Baird - Mickey Mayberry Greta Granstedt - Cora Mayberry Virginia Vincent - Jennie Blake John Wengraf - John Meiermann Gage Clarke - Doctor Rev. Whitfield John McNamara - Sheriff Bicknell Harry Harvey Sr. - Station Agent Mel F. Allen - Mel, the Baggage Clerk Dan Gachman - County Clerk Robert Lynn - Dr. Paul Beecher
1950s Europe becoming too dangerous for him, Dracula flees to America, to a small town in California where he pretends to be Bellac Gordal cousin to the Mayberry family. On Dracula's trail is a European police investigator and vampire hunter, John Meiermann.
This is understated horror movie. Dracula is never actually seen biting his victims and we only hear the sound of bat wings. Dracula doesn't cast a reflection in mirrors or show up on pictures but there is one scene in which Francis Lederer does cast a shadow. The destruction of his victims effects Dracula by temporarily stunning him with their pain. Although the film is black and white the lady vampire's blood is red.
I wonder if Dan Curtis saw this movie before he introduced the vampire cousin, Barnabas Collins into Dark Shadows in 1966.
Side B of the DVD features "The Vampire" (1957).
"The Return of Dracula" is included in the Best Buy Exclusive box set "Midnite Movies: Volume Two - Vampires & Witchchraft".
