Ultraman Cosmos - July 7, 2001 to July 20, 2002 (65 episodes)
I have not seen the prequel movie or the films that followed the series.
Eight years have passed since 11 year old Musashi Haruno met Ultraman Cosmos (Ultraman Cosmos: First Contact). Nineteen year old Musashi Haruno has joined EYES (Elite Young Expert Squadron).
In these early episodes Ultraman Cosmos has two forms: Luna (blue and silver) and Corona (blue, red, silver). Later he gains a third form Eclipse and in the films 3 more forms.
Ultraman Cosmos is basically a pacifist, he would rather not kill if he can avoid it. EYES shares the same philosophy so their aircraft are armed with giant tranquilizing darts and laser nets in order to take the giant monsters alive. If that's not possible they're also armed with missles and laser beam weapons.
Luna's powers are mostly defensive, he attempts to calm down the monsters rather than kill them. When Cosmos finds that he has no choice but to kill he switches to the more powerful Corona form.
EYES has two female members who seem to stay in their headquarters when the males go out after the monsters. One of the male members, a pilot named Fubuki, doesn't like Musashi. The teams leader, oldest member, looks familiar to me but I'm not sure from where.
In the first episode Musashi Haruno is friends with a giant, bird like monster. When the usually friendly creature is infected by an alien virus it turns violent and breaks through the forcefield surrounding the island its kept on. Musashi Haruno manages to calm it down and it starts to follow him back to the island when the security forces show up and open fire on the creature. They ignore EYES call to stop. Naturally the monster is angry and attacks the security ship. When Musashi Haruno tries to intervene his angry friend destroys his aircraft. Musashi Haruno is saved by Ultraman Cosmos, who then appears in Luna form to pacifiy the monster.
In the second episode Musashi Haruno has been recruted into EYES. The vice captain does question his surviving the destruction of his aircraft in the first episode. On his first mission for EYES Musashi Haruno is chased over a cliff by a giant monster. Musashi Haruno again hears the voice of his childhood friend Ultraman Cosmos and the Cosmo Pluck just appears in his hand. Luna pacifies the monster so the alien force controling it produces a more agressive version of the monster, which kills the original creature. This makes Cosmos angry and he switches to Corona mode to destroy the new monster.
In the third episode Musashi tries to use the Cosmo Plock but it fails to operate. Ultraman Cosmos is unwilling to appear. Later Cosmo does appear but only in Luna mode. He holds the monster so EYES can hit it with a giant tranquilizer dart.
In the fourth episode the monster is a giant robot which falls from space. At first it just sits near a field of flowers and talks nicely to three children (2 boys, 1 girl) who first discovered it. When it decides to go for a walk EYES tries to capture it without hurting it using a laser net but when it breaks through the net their captain orders them to take more agressive measures.
In the fifth episode Musashi and Fubuki are sent on a mission together in a car. I think this was done on purpose in attempt to get them to get along better. The monster is a giant firefly or lightning bug which absorbs Luna's pacifying ray to power its own energy weapon.'
Typical of these shows Musashi's coworkers don't know he's the host for Ultrman Cosmos, even though they saw Musashi fall off a ledge into a crevice which Ultrman Cosmos then flew out of. I don't know how Musashi explained his surviving the fall. Cosmos and Musashi occasionally talk to each other. At the end of episode 3 Cosmos (Luna) appeared in the sky and looked down at Musashi.
I don't care for the opening or closing themes, but I then didn't expect to.
