i thought i was the only one who thought this was overrated. it (and the sequel) are not bad, but not nearly as much fun as the more colorful movies later on.
then, they turned into "gladiator" movies, devoid of fantasy elements and get really boring (for the most part). i sent you a couple of these, didn't i? lots are available now on cheap-o DVD.
a good review of an average movie (Steve did look great though, no question, and no steriods!).

You sent me Hercules in the Valley of Woe and Hercules and the Scarlet Pimpernel. I'm waiting for my mom to send these movies to me via mail (I'm dying to review these two obscure films for my site).
Like I said, I'm not fully convinced that peplum are all what they're made out to be by B-movie enthusiasts. It could be that I started watching them too late in life. After I get Fire Monsters..., I'd like to get Goliath and the Dragon. That looks fun as well.

I watched my new Fire Monsters Against the Son of Hercules tonight. It's certainly a fun little film--the most entertaining peplum that I've watched thus far. I'll have an extended review of it up later.

I got mine off of ebay. It's the inexpensive Alpha Video DVD. The picture isn't that great (grainy and some scratches), but it never detracted from the fun (in my opinion).

Well, FMASOH convinced me that some peplum can really be fun. So, I'll take my chances with Goliath and the Dragon, after which I'll take a break from genre for a while.

got this DVD today from DDD, man, it's already a fun movie, and i've only watched 17 minutes of it. too bad the print isn't nicer, but better than i've ever seen before, that's for sure. the monster at the beginning is very well done, at least the face. i was surprised to see it wiggling so much!
more when i've finished the movie.

i just watched GIANTS OF THESSALY, which is a Jason/Golden Fleece retelling. it's interesting, and has some nice set pieces, but only the last battle is really fun. the cyclops is pretty cool, too.
it's not as good as JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, but it does at least have a proper ending!

I've now watched "Hercules", "The Giant of Marathon" (which has no giant) and "Hercules Unchained".
I know theyre Italian (or Italian & French in case of HC) made films but it still bugs me that the English dubbing didn't correct the names to the Greek. For example, Hercules would curse Zeus not Jupiter.
I have $1 DVDs of, but have not yet watched Gladiators 7 / Invincible Gladiator, Hercules and the Masked Rider / Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon, Hercules Prisoner of Evil / Hercules and the Princess of Troy.

the Greek name for Hercules is "Heracles", iffen i remember my mythology properly, which i think may have been used once or twice only in movies, if ever. Hercules is the Roman name for our hero.

Hercules and the Masked Rider (1964)
Alan Steel (Sergio Ciani) - Hercules Mimmo Palmara - Don Juan José Greci - Dona Blanca
This Italian film dubbed in English has nothing to do with the Greek hero. Hercules in this is a gypsy strongman who is not the lead character. The original title is Golia e il cavaliere mascherato ("Golia and the Masked Knight" according to Babel Fish).
Banished by his uncle Don Juan is captured by gypsies who befriend him after he surives a fight with Hercules. To save the woman he loves, Dona Blanca, Don Juan dons a red mask and cape and fights the forces of the wicked Duke who killed his uncle and is forcing his cousin to marry.
I enjoyed this Italian version of Zorro. I have it on a $1 DVD along with Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon.

Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon (1964)
Rock Stevens (Peter Lupus) - Hercules Helga Liné - Taneal Mario Petri - King Phaleg Livio Lorenzon - Salman Osar Anna Maria Polani - Asparia Tullio Altamura - Azzur Franco Balducci - Bahar Diego Pozzetto - Bomar Mirko Valentin - Glaucone Diego Michelotti - Christophisis Rosy De Leo - Lady in Waiting Eugenio Bottari - Azur's Major Domo
Peter Lupus is probably better known for the role of Willy Armitage in the original Mission: Impossible tv series.
Hercules goes to Babylon to rescue his queen who along with many others of his people have been taken into slavery. The king of Assyria also searches for Asparia in order to force her to marry him so that he gains control of her queendom without having to invade it. Then he will lead his troops and hers against Babylon. When the three co-rulers of Babylon (2 brothers and a sister) learn this they seek the queen, the brothers to marry her and thus forge a new empire without their siblings, and the woman to kill a rival.
Peter Lupus or Rock Stevens as he is listened in the credits, isn't bad a Hercules but the ending of the film is pretty silly. Malnurished, unarmed slaves able to defeat well feed, well trained and armed soldiers. There's also a major plot hole. Through most of the film the Babylonians don't know which slave is Asparia but suddenly without explination as to how they do.
I've got 2 more Hercules films, together on another $1 DVD.

Probably helps to know that in the original Italian the character was not named Hecules.
Hercules Against the Mongols (1963)
On his death bed Ghengis Kahn orders peace between Mongolia and the west but this is not what his three sons want so to stir the people to war, they murder their father's most trusted adviser, a man beloved of the people, and say it was a white man's arrow that slew him.
The mongols assault a Christian town killing its king and capturing its princess. The young prince Alexander escapes. The boy meets Hercules who promises to save the princess. The three brothers each want the woman and her land. To find out who is the best man they have to hold a tournament. At the tournament the Christian prisoners are given a chance to fight the brothers for the right to take the princess' place as a slave. Of course all the men who try are killed, until Hercules, apparently now a Christian, volunteers to fight for the princess. Of course he wins. While the brothers plot their revenge against Hercules, Alexander has been located and a traitor is sent after him.
On $1 DVD with "Hercules and the Princess of Troy". The disc and case are mislabeled as featuring Hercules Prisoner of Evil (1964). The film is missing the opening credits, I had to check IMdb descriptions of films to find the correct title.
Since I was expecting to see Hercules battle werewolves this film was a disappointment.

Hercules and the Princess of Troy (1965)
Gordon Scott - Hercules Paul Stevens - Diogenes Mart Hulswit - Ulysses Diana Hyland - Princess Diana Steve Garrett - Petra Gordon Mitchell - Pirate Captain Giorgio Ardisson - Leander Roger Browne - Ortag Jacques Stanislawski - Argus Dan Christian - Botus Everett Sloane - Boatswain
Hercues, Diogenes, Ulysses and others defeat pirates and rescue their prisoners, citizens of Troy who have fled because once a month a sea monster appears and once a month a virgin girl is fed to it. Hercules desides to free Troy of the monster. The king of Troy (actually regent) claims to welcome Hercules' help, but is the man who wears the crown only until the Princess Diana comes of age in 2 months really interested in seeing the monster defeated?
This 47 minute film was apparently a pilot episode of a failed Hercules tv series.
Hercules and the Princess of Troy is on a $1 DVD along with Hercules Against the Mongols. The case and disc are mislabeled as having Hercules and the Princess of Troy and Hercules Prisoner of Evil.
The monster was interesting, but nothing unexpected happened.

"The Princess of Troy" is an interesting little movie, since you actually get to hear the real voices of several peplum stars. Carlo Ramboldi did the monster, who also made the ET puppet and several other monsters.
could have been a fun tv show, though!
