would've cost alot of money.Back then it was cheaper to do westerns because you could re-use sets and stock footage galorefrom past tv westerns, serials and films.

I'm about to give up on Peplum. I watched Hercules and the Moon Men and was totally disappointed. It seemed to be okay for most of the ride, with enough brawling to make up for the slow spots. I was getting revved up for the climax, and then it spent 10 minutes with our heroes wandering through the wasteland and about 2 minutes against the Moon Men themselves. I felt cheated to the max!

many cheap dvd versions of this film cut out Herc's fight with the cave monster yet keep the long dragging pointless running through the desert scene intact!!!

So there's actually more to it than what I saw? Wasn't this released on VHS by Video Treasures or Goodtimes or something? I wonder if they left it intact?

If you have the name "Hercules" and word "Moonmen" in one title together, how could you possibly go wrong?? hehe I was just reading in the latest issue of FILMFAX about a movie called The Dragon's Blood (or SIGFRIDO) that looks basically like a remake of Fritz Lang's version of "Der Ring des Nibelungen", SIGFRIED. Even has the full sized dragon in it. Now that would be interesting or scary to see, since it looks like maybe good ol' Sigfrido is singing in it. La la laaaa! The article is about "lost films that are being rediscovered" and it looks like this one has been restored and distributed in France as "Le Chevalier blanc".

only the "Something Weird" DVD has the ape scene intact, unless you want to see idiots talking through a movie, then watch mst for it. the GoodTimes tape i had of it did NOT have the ape scene in it at all, nor has any other version.
i'd like to get that DVD set, but i think i could just borrow a few discs.

I picked up the box set and thouroughly enjoyed it as I only had maybe 10 or 12 of the 50 films in it! The fullscreen print of Herc and the moonMen in the set is complete with the ape monster too! Good old Fred Olen Ray's Retromedia has also just released a nice double feature with a widescreen print of HERCULES AND THE CAPTIVE WOMEN and HERCULES PRISONER OF EVIL which I'd like to pick up eventually.

gotta love Fred. i'll have to look into that.
i watched MACISTE IN KING SOLOMON'S MINES the other day (thanks Mike!) and it was fun. Mark Forest did a lot of these, didn't he? could be a worse life, running around Italy with beautiful women!

Yeah Mark Forest sure did do alot of peplums. Believe it or not he used the money and the location to study opera in Rome and i heard he teaches opera at a college in california these days! I do like Mark's presona, he always seems to be having a good time in the films like Reg Park and Alan Steel. As much as i like Steve reeves and Gordon Scott, you never really got the sense that they were having a good time.

I got four new peplum films to check out. I have some other projects to take care of so it'll be a while before I get around to watching them. They are:
1. Devil of the Desert Against the Son of Hercules 2. Giant of Marathon 3. Sons of Hercules: Land of Darkness (I believe that's the name) 4. Ulysses Against the Son of Hercules (courtesy of Dave)
I also need to finish watching Hercules Unchained. I haven't been a big fan of all the peplum I've seen, but I'll continue to wade through the genre in hopes of finding a diamond in the rough.

he's a decent swordfighter as well. er, make that fencer, i suppose.

I finally finished "Hercules Unchained" today. It wasn't bad. The plot was interesting, mixing the story of Oedipus' sons with Hercules' adventures with Omphale (which is part of the actual story). However there wasn't a lot of action, just the climax (which was pretty good), a short fight in Lydia, and his wrestling match with Antaeus. While the action scenes are good and the Italian actresses are beautiful, it's not the ideal peplum in my eyes.

Devil of the Desert Against the Son of Hercules (aka Anthar, the Invincible)
Cast: Kirk Morris
Director: Anthony Dawson
Story: An evil sheik character overthrows a small Arab nation/city-state, imprisoning the prince and killing the king. The princess escapes and meets with Anthar (Kirk Morris), one of the sons of Hercules. He rescues her after she's almost sold into slavery. He then infiltrates the city to rescue the prince, who leads a revolt against the sheik.
Comments: Forgettable, but rather enjoyable little Peplum film. The plot is very simple and divided into four portions: the overthrow, the slavery sequence, the rescue, and the rebellion. Not many twists in the story. The pace slows down a bit during the slavery sequence, but picks up a lot in the second half. There's a good deal of swashbuckling action and a short sequence where Kirk Morris wrestles a rhinoceres that looks like a brontothere. It also climaxes with a Hall of Mirrors sequence not unlike Enter the Dragon. I found it more entertaining than some other peplum I've seen, although unless I write a long review of it, I probably won't remember a lot about it several months down the road.
It's availabe for free download at the Internet Movie Arquive.

i find both Reeves's Hercules movies to be pretty tedious going, despite all the acclaim they get for being "the first". i much prefer the more imaginative ones like Devil of the Desert or Conquerer of Atlantis, but that's me.
good reviews!

Sons of Hercules: Land of Darkness (1963)
Starring: Dan Vadis
Director: Alvaro Mancori, Lewis Mann
Synopsis: The son of Hercules, Argoles, saves a maiden from a lion. She turns out to be the princess of what appears to be a small town of thatched huts. The king tells Argoles that if he kills the dragon that's been ravaging the countryside, he can marry the princess. So Argoles heads out, receiving a spear from a mysterious witch on the way. While he's out, another kingdom pillages the "kingdom", taking everyone hostage. When Argoles returns, he sets out with the only remaining person in town (the comic relief) to rescue the people.
Commentary: Before we begin, let me note that this was orginally a Hercules movie, but was redubbed as a Son of Hercules movie. I don't know why. It also seemed to be broken into two segments, as my version has what appears to a trailer for the second part in the middle of the film.
This was an OK peplum film with a lot of things to like, but with bland direction and forgettable characters. Argoles gets to fight a lion, a bear, a dragon (stock footage from Reeves' Hercules), and some elephants. The underground palace/kingdom is pretty cool. The Land of Darkness is full of traps, which is neat. Dan Vadis (who later did several gladiator films and Spaghetti Westerns) is in excellent physical shape and is surprisingly agile. That said, there are some good sword n' sandal fights that we've come to expect in this genre. Also, the bad guys are kind of interesting--they kind of have a Elizabeth of Bathory thing going on.
However, it's all pretty bland. There's no spark between Argoles and princess, who's pretty generic. The comic relief is rather irritating at times. For being a dragon roaming the countryside, Argoles had to travel quite a bit to find him. The "kingdom" consisting of thatched huts is rather funny. Oh, and supposedly there was actually another dragon in it, but the distributor cut it out and put in the stock footage instead. May they be thrown into the pit of lava found in this movie.
Worth a watch for Peplum fans, but newcomers should check out another, better one instead.

Ulysses Against the Son of Hercules (aka Ulysses Against Hercules)
Year: 1961
Starring:
Georges Marchal Michael Lane Alessandra Panaro Dominique Boschero Raffaela Carra Gianni Santuccio
Director: Mario Caiano
Synopsis: Heracles is sent after Ulysses after he blinds Polyphemus, the cyclops. His job is to deliver Ulysses into the Cyclops' hands to be slave to them, for Polyphemus was a son of Neptune. They have numerous adventures encountering a race of bird men, fighting cave men, and a treacherous suitor to Heracles' love, Helen.
Comments: Like <i>Sons of Hercules: Land of Darkness</i>, there is a lot to like about this film, but I doubt that it's the sum of all its parts. The plot is reminiscent of modern bounty hunter films, like de Niro's <i>Midnight Run</i>. There are some good battle scenes, including a pirate's raid on Ulysses' ship, a battle between Greek soldiers and a band of deformed cavemen, and the final duel. Also, the queen of the bird men is one of the sexiest female characters in these films. Probably the best part about this movie is King Lagos. His psychopathic, overracting performance makes him one of the most memorable Peplum characters.
An interesting point: Heracles is said by the narrator to be the son of Hercules. Heracles IS Hercules. Idiots...it's like renaming Hercules as Goliath.

it's all the same to me, though i do prefer Greek names of the characters over the Roman ones, except maybe Hercules which is so common. it's also easier to say than Heracles!
still, since they are Italian movies i'm not surprised at them mostly being Italian names of the Gods.
except for Maxus!

THOR AND THE AMAZON WOMEN (1963)
Joe Robinson ... Taur Susy Andersen ... Tamar Harry Baird ... Ubaratutu Claudia Capone ... Agarit Alberto Cevenini ... Siros Maria Fiore ... Yamad Carla Foscari Janine Hendy ... The Black Queen (as Jannin Hendy)
Susy is the hottest of the bunch (and Taur/Thor's girlfriend).
an interesting movie, mostly made of women fighting each other, and then Taur taking them all on. it's not a gladiator movie, it's set in more prehistoric times.
much PC nonsense about poor Harry, who's character does refer to Taur as "master" but at least he's a lead character in the movie, instead what he'd be doing in the US at the time.
