interesting idea- i like the term "Beat Spandex" more tho, since "spaghetti" seems to mostly conotate westerns.

Spaghetti spandex is when Santo eats too many bean burritos and can't make it to the toilet on time.
Hey I'm Mexican and the biggest Santo fan alive today so I'm allowed to get away with that joke.

Yes.I have SUPERARGO and GOLDFACE in my collection. GOLDFACE is the lesser 'Spaghetti Spandex' hero, he's not that good (even if his costume is a scream) but he would be enough to beat EL SANTO with only an hand! Let's face it! El Santo is laughable! His mask sucks! LOL LOL LOL

Santo could take on both Goldface and Superargo mainly because both Goldface and Superargo used doubles for their wrestling scenes.

Santo could take on both Goldface and Superargo mainly because both Goldface and Superargo used doubles for their wrestling scenes. You're crazy! Back in his haydays, Giovanni Cianfriglia had a spectacular physique and was a 'double' himself for TONS of action movies stars... figure it out! He can wrestle, he can twist, he can destroy! Superargo is provided with powers, SANTO is just a poor human BEEF wearing a mask! LOL Godlface has *NO* powers, but in his true identity he's a biologist and got a very skilled mind. Again, SANTO is dumb. LOL! No, no, no, no guy. Superargo rulez, and Goldface is also very cool (despite he's the minor out of the two).

OK, I can't sit on the sidelines of this "debate". As much as I enjoy the Italian masked hero movies, they are and always will be , nothing more than pale imitations of the real deal-the Mexican luchaheroes. In typical Italian fashion, the filmakers threw in elements of other popular genres of the day like James Bond and comic book heroes as well. The Mexican guys though, were the real thing-Santo was a wrestling champion IN REAL LIFE and had an illustrious career in the ring that spanned 40 years! He made over 50 films!Hell, Santo alone made more movies than all of the Italian masked heroes put together! Superargo is not a very original character either,he's very similar not only to Santo, but James Bond and the Phantom. And even a cursory comparison of the terribly staged and ridiculously posed and phony "wrestling" scenes of the Superargo films to any of Santos shows you who would come out on top in the ring. Giovanni Cianfriglia may have had a good build, but he was most definitely not a wrestler! El Santo was, and he always said that even regular stuntmen were unsuitable as opponents or in the roles of the enemies in his films as they did not know how to take the blows and other wrestling moves the action demanded-those roles were always played by other wrestlers. Santo is a huge icon worldwide, particularly in Latin America, the US and Japan, on the scale of characters like Godzilla or even Batman- whereas Superargo is really only familiar to a small number of B-Movie fans and among the Italian public. Now, I love the Italian masked heroes and would have loved to see Superargo get together with Mexico's Champions of Justice for a case, but the truth is the Italian heroes are just a minor footnote to the Mexican luchahero genre-granted a very enjoyable one that tries some different ideas than the Mexican movies, but minor and short-lived with none of the Mexican originals popularity nonetheless.

Redking,
I have to contradict you, I'm sorry.
I was joking, we can't really compare ANY of the ITALIAN SUPERHEROS with EL SANTO. Tomatoes and potatoes. It's like arguing about how much similar Superman and Green Lantern are. Ziero.
The wrestling element in the Superargo saga is just a background detail; Superargo never was a professional wrestler however--- he was a former WWII soldier who discovered to have (physical) powers and chose to make a living on it. He killed El Tigre because he didn't realized the full potential of his powers, and that was the extreme, fatalistic consequence.
Then, let me say one thing or two:
I consider "SUPERARGO and the FACELESS GIANTS" as the greatest Italian movie ever produced, and one of the top 5 cult-movies of all the times. A dark, poignant dissertation on the "Super-man" figure --- almost a philosophical movie.
While in the first movie Superargo turned from a careless anti-professional wrestler to a classical super-spy, and stole some elements from the Phantom (just the costume - still, the full piece mask is quite original) and some from James Bond (the devices), I don't see any affinity with El Santo.
Then, again, in FACELESS - the absolute masterpiece - Superargo has evolved again; he's almost a philosopher, a guru. His powers are now mental, and his attitude is meditative and measured. The days of violence are gone. He don't "fix" the situations through his fighting skills anymore. He's the "perfect" man who embraced a new way of life; a new way to intend the role of the "super-man" in the context.
As far as concerned the other Italian Supermen, they are all provoking, ground-breaking and ambiguous. They mixed up the libertine ideals of the '60ies with the "classical" elements of the superheroes. They were all ANTI-HEROES when anti-heroes weren't common as today. In my mind, this is genius. The Italian Superheroes were the first ones to "break" the conventions, the boundaries.
Still, El Santo is a gianteous legend.

Santo himself evolved over the years. In his first two films he was a special undercover police officer. In the early 60's he was a Batmanesque figure who helped those in need[including the police]without all the legal red tape.In the late 60's he took a stab at being a secret agent. In the 70's the his character wore many hats,as a secret agent, private eye/bodyguard/ or sometimes just the wrestler who through circumstances wound up in out of the ordinary situations. So Superargo was very simmilar to Santo.

spys and caves with gadgets were all the rage- Santo in those early films really owed a lot to the tv Batman and some James Bond as well.
fortunately, by only appearing in the 60s, Superargo and pals didn't appear in the dreadful movies Santo and his pals did in the 70s and 80s (BESTIAS DEL TERROR, one of the worst movies i've ever seen).
