Victor Hernandez a student of Communications at the UNIVERSIDAD IBEROAMERICANA has accused Mexico's national electoral institution known as IFE of plagerism. Now why am I posting this here?Because it involves Hijo del Santo.
Victor Hernandez wrote the script and directed a ten minute short film titled ESTA MASCARA ES MIA O EL SANTO CONTRA LOS BUROCRATAS.[THIS MASK IS MINE OR SANTO VERSUS THE BEAUROCRATS]In the film the son of the legendary silver masked man arrives at the offices of the Mexican Treasury Department concerning financial matters[taxes?]and when he arrives at the teller's booth the woman doesn't attend to him right away. Then the frustrated Santo is asked for an ID which he produces his registered voter card from IFE.The woman claims that it isn't a valid ID and that he needs to remove his mask and produce an ID with his real name and picture of him unmasked.Santito raises his voice which brings out some beaurocratic higher ups played by wrestlers Averno,Mefisto,La Sombra y La Flecha.A fight reminiscent of the old Santo films ensues and Hijop del Santo vanquishes his foes by leaping atop a desk and delivering a bonafide Santo plancha. Now here comes the part of the plagerism.
A few months later the IFE unleashed an ad campaign meant to get people to register to vote.In one of their commercials a masked wrestler by the name of CAMALEON,played by a flabby actor in a mask highly derivative of Santo's,appears at an IFE office to get his voter registration card. The lady at the booth tells him he has to remove his mask to be properly identified and to prove he is who he says he is jumps up on a desk and delivers a plancha to another person waiting in line.Though only about a minute long the commercial
has some similarities to the ten minute film which are not easy to discount as mere coincidence. The people at IFE have simply said that the commercial came from the advertisment agency that handled the commercial known as PROEZA SLAI and the production studio that filmed the commercial BEHAR Y ASOCIADOS aka FOCUS.The creative director of PROEZA SLAI by the name of Jacobo Vazquez simply said that they didn't set out to plagerize anyone else's work and that if there are similarities it's a shame.Victor Hernandez claimed his short was screened various times in the months before the commercial was ever aired and claimed that anyone involved in the commercial could have attended any of the screenings and taken the idea from there.I have not seen either the short or the commercial, just some screencaps of both in a magazine and the similarities are so striking that it is hard to write it off as just mere coincidence
