Superboy (1988-1992)
the first season stars
John Haymes Newton as Clark Kent/Superboy
Stacy Haiduk as Lana Lang
Jim Calvert as T. J. White
with regular guest appearances by
Stuart Whitman as Pa Kent
Roger Pretto as Detective Harris
Scott Wells as Lex Luthor
Michael Manno as Leo (Lex's associate)
In the second season Clark Kent and Lex Luthor are replaced with different actors and T. J. is apparently written out. The series was canceled after its fourth season, even though a 5th and 6th had been planned, because of a legal dispute over who had the rights to the characters, which apparently has just recently been settled.
I don't recall ever having watched this series. The first season is on DVD so I rented it. Season two will be released only if season one sells well.
I guess this series is set in Metropolis. In the first episode Clark mentions having known the Langs from when they all lived in Smallville.
Clark Kent, Lana Lang, Lex Luthor and T. J. White are college students at Shuster University (which has a building called the Siegel Center). Clark and T. J. work for the college newspaper. T. J. is from Metropolis and is the son of Clark Kent's future employeer Perry White.
This shows Clark Kent, unlike Smallville's, has morals. When his girlfriend, Sara Danner, invites him into her room (she wants -him- for her 18th birthday present) he declines and when Lana Lang asks if he ever spent a night with her he's disgusted at the idea.
Disc 1 has 8 episodes. It has a "Feautures" item on the menu but all it leads to is a screen saying to see other discs for special features.
In these episodes Clark lifts his glasses off his eyes before using x-ray vision. There is no special effect for the x-ray vision, we just see what Clark sees.
The first episode features a young Lex Luthor, with hair. Professor Lang, Lana's father, bringa a Mayan artefact to Shuters University. His assistant is afraid of a Mayan curse which the professor laughs at, but the professor's plane nearly crashes, a tornado ruins the exhibat and the professor becomes ill. Lex steals the object. Superboy has to recover it and return it to the ancient temple to break the curse. This episode is the first time Superboy is weakened by magic.
In the second episode Clark Kent is dating a girl who is the daughter of a mafia boss. She's kidnapped by a rival mobster. Superboy uses his freezing breath, something that has not happened in Smallville.
In the third episode Abe Vigoda guest stars as an old man who thinks he's back in 1940s Germany, that Lana is his granddaughter and that people who come to his junkyard are Nazis out to kill him and Lana. First time a bullet bounces of Superboy.
In the fourth episode Ray Walston (the martian in My Favorite Martian) guest stars as a college professor who is working on a forumla which would greatly increase the efficienty of gasoline burning engines thus reducing pollution. When his computer containg all his data shorts out and the vehicle on wich the formula is being tested blows up T. J's Russian girlfriend is suspected of sabotage. Remember the cold war between the USA and the USSR was still going on. T. J. does have not have Clark's morals. Its suggested that he and Natasha spent the night together in her room.
In episode five Lana leads a stupid protest and is tricked by men dressed like football players into helping them steal an experimental laser gun. Clark receives a phone call from Mrs. Kent. Strangely Lana and T.J. act as if they had never seen Superboy before. Maybe this was the first episode filmed but aired out of sequence. T. J. does comment "you know, he reminds me of somebody...." This episode features Superbody's first use of heat vision and Superboy says "I fight for truth, justice and the American way".
In episode six Leif Garrett guest stars as a famous singer who's getting an honorary degree from Shuster U. Actually I didn't recognise him, he had less hair than he did in other shows I remember him from. He dates Lana which makes Clark jealous, although Clark admits to T.J. that he has no right to be. The singer turns out to be a homicidal maniac.
In episode seven a series of robberies are carried out, according to witnesses by Superboy. Superboy is actually arrested and finger printed so Clark Kent better not get arressted. The detecitve doesn't think Superbody did it and gets a judge to set bail at $500 (normally $10,000). Superboy has to borrow the money from Lana Lang. This episode includes the second use of heat vision.
In episode eight Lex Luthor bets heavily that State will beat Shuster in Basketball, then tries to fix the game so his own school loses. Rather a petty crime for the great Lex Luthor but I guess he had to start somewhere. Clark uses a phone booth to change into Superboy suit for the first time.
Disc 2 should have Mr. Mxyzptlk on it.
Although this series has some very bad acting at times, the portrayal of Clark Kent is probably closer to the comics than in Smallville and I'm enjoying it much more.
