With just three days worth of release against SUPERMAN RETUNRS week and a half release,PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN has outgrossed it at the box office. It's opening weekend box office was over $130 million dollars while Superman returns with a week and a half has just barely broke the 100 million dollar mark and is starting to slip from the top of the box office. It seems that the new Superman movie doesn't have the muscle to sustain the repeat viewings that have made the Spiderman and X-MEN films big hits.

I enjoyed the first PIRATES outing, but I'm really sick of Captain Jack Sparrow popping up in my face every time I go online. I know this is how marketing works, but talk about over-saturation. I don't even feel like seeing the sequel now.

“Pirates” had it’s moments, but I thought it was just a series of events cobbled together, trying very hard to find some cohesive storyline. Depp was the saving grace of the first movie (which I wasn’t particularly a fan of), but for this one, it was just same old, same old. The Kraken was the highlight of the movie. Eventhough I still prefer Harryhausen’s version, this beast was well articulated.
So, if you are just very curious or unless you are a huge fan of Depp, or are in love Keira Knightly, I’d say wait for this to come out on DVD.

It would appear however that SUPERMAN RETURNS was not the box office mega blockbuster the studio hoped it would be.

Loved the first Pirates movie, except for the last 2 minutes which were really non-coherant to the rest of the story.
Loved the second movie even more. Besides it being very entertaining, the most significant thing for me is that even though it was laden with CGI effects, it's the FIRST movie with so much CGI that did NOT just blare out to me "LOOK AT MY PURTY CGI EFFECTS". I was actually really impressed with how integrated everything was and how well it melded with the rest of the visual look. To me that's really something because I am so freaking tired of CGI everywhere I look.
It shows ILM can actually still kick ass when not under the direction of a nut job.

141 Million for two weeks hardly constitues as a bomb. I have zero desire to see the new Supes movie, but to say it isn't a blockbuster is incorrect.

Keep in mind that today's FX heavy films plus the overhyped media campaigns tend to go over $100,000,000 so to be considered profitable it has to make about twice as much.I assume it will make that money in the international market where most people wouldn't care if the movie isn't what a Superman movie should be like.

I saw Pirates the other day with the family and I really enjoyed it, wholly because of Davy Jones and his HP Lovecraft inspired Deep One-like crew as well as the Kraken who was an incredible homage to Harryhausen's giant octopus from IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA. Jonny Depp and the rest of the cast were all likable and funny, but otherwise routine shenanigans. It was the Lovecraftian aspect of the movie that I loved. Davy Jones actually looks like Cthulhu, it's great! I haven't seen Supes yet, but I'll probably go early next week when i have a day off, as I have a free ticket to see it from the JUSTICE LEAGUE dvds.

i'm pretty sure Warner thought SUPERMAN would be a huge money maker this summer, and didn't the movie cost at least $230 million? i've heard (and read) a movie has to make 3 X it's cost back to be considered a success these days, and that's just the US gross.
much like KING LONG, while not a bomb, it's definately underperforming by studio expectations.

I have heard that the studio is trying to downplay the financial dissapointment but there is no denying that the film didn't do as well as expected.People were hoping for SPIDERMAN style box office numbers.
