This movie about two Americans involved in the transporting of supplies into West Germany by airplane to get around the USSR's blockade of 1948 was actually filmed in West Berlin. The bombed out buildings were real. There were only 3 actors and 2 actresses in this film all the other American military personell were played by real American militery personell on duty in Germany at the time and the rest of the Germans civilans were real German civilans.
Flight Engineer Danny MacCullough falls for a pretty young German widow and through her learns what life is like for ordinary citizens of Berlin after the war.
GSA (radar operator) Henry "Hank" Kowalski a former POW despises Germans for what one of the German guards did to him but after several months also starts dating a German woman.
It's an interesting film. Right up to the end I didn't know if Frederica really loved Danny or whether Hank would come to see that not all Germans were Nazis.
I have The Big Lift on a double-sided $1 DVD along with The Battle of El Alamein (1969). Case, disc, and even side B menu are mislabeled as Battle of the Last Panzer (rather than The Big Lift).
