this is the live action film version of America's favorite sailor. i really like the movie, but i can see why it wasn't a hit. it's got TOO much going on. i would have left out Sweet Pea until the end, set it up for a sequel.
excellent cast, and extremely true to the strip itself. i would also not have made Popeye's arms so huge, as Popeye (and the cast) were designed for a 2-d humorous strip, and thus were supposed to look funny. trying to translate it directly makes them look weird (it also failed in the cg Popeye that was done recently).
the songs are decent, but nothing really stands out, with the exception of Olive singing about Bluto. but they are all nicely done.
the story: Popeye ends up in Sweethaven looking for his dad. it meanders around from there.

This film seems to get generally panned by most who have seen it, but I really like the film. I saw it at the theatre in 1980 and have watched it on TV whenever I could. I still have to buy the dvd, I avoided getting it on vhs for years because I wanted a widescreen version.

Very good film, if somewhat disappointing. Outstanding casting. Worth the price of admission to see the visually stunning set & costume designs. Amazing. Robin Williams seems an odd choice, although his star was rocketing upward when this was made, but he mostly manages to rein in his wackiness and play it straight.
I need to get off my duff and pick this up on DVD also. Just wish they'd go all out and release an edition with tons of extras, supplementary materials and cast & crew commentaries, etc., etc. Doubtful, due to the film's lackluster box office. It's more of a curiosity than anything else. Still lots of fun. And love it or hate it, you have to admit that Shelly Duvall was simply BORN to play Olive Oil!

they really should have a nicer DVD of this, since all the principles could be talked to. at least a doc about the making of.

I saw this movie also in the cinema back in 1980 and I liked it too. The artists fit in the roles and it looks like they came straight out of the comics. I had years later the chance, to see on holidays, the place where they built the town in Malta on a small island, the town was still existing.
