"Walking Tall" vocals by Don Williams.
A fictional TV movie based on the life of Sherif Buford Pusser.
Opening narration, Buford Pusser (Brian Dennehy):
"The wrong kind of people have had their say for too long and I want to remind them that somewhere in this world there is a little law and order left - to let them know in the only way their kind understands, that they can't bribe or threaten their way and they will damn well pay dearly for every crime they commit."
When two young men are killed and two young women are blinded by drinking illegal alcohol Sheriff Buford Pusser goes after an old friend who sells the stuff in his club. To avoid being accused of harassment Sheriff Pusser inforces old, outdated laws still on the books, against every in town, including the local judge.
The real Buford Pusser was Sheriff of McNairy County, Tennessee the most corrupt county in the state, possibly the country. He cleaned it up.
The attempt to kill the sheriff by shooting at him in his car, while his kids were in the back seat is similar to the real life attempt to kill him which resulted in the death of his wife on August 12, 1967. In this film however he's already a widower and no one was hurt this time.
Not giving anything away really to tell you that the sheriff is alive at the end of this film.
The real Buford Pusser was killed in a car crash August 21, 1974. Whether it was an accident or murder will probably never be known because the state of Tennessee refused to investigate.
Another $1 DVD. Its worth it.
The theatrical pictures about Sheriff Buford Pusser are:
Walking Tall (1973) - for which he was technical consultant
Walking Tall Part II (1975) - technical consultant Carl Pusser, his father
Final Chapter: Walking Tall (1977) - technical consultant Carl Pusser
In 1981 there was a Walking Tall televsision series, only 7 episodes.
The 2004 movie Walking Tall is total fiction, has nothing to do with Sheriff Buford Pusser. I haven't seen it (don't plan to) but according to the IMdb there is dialogue about the previous sheriff mysteriously crashing his car into a tree and being killed, which is what happened to Buford Pusser.
