This series was produced by and starred Joe Lara. It just ran one season and I never saw it while on TV. (after about a year and a half of searching I stumbled on a DVD set, though there is no official R1)
After watching the first 8 or so episodes I'd have to say it's pretty fun and in a sense more true to Burroughs' original pulpy ideas than any other adaptation. Several episodes are loosely based on the original pulps but it's mostly a mishmash of ERBs concepts strung together.
Queen La of Opar is a recurring anti-heroine. Popping up to either cause trouble or help Tarzan depending on the day. Jane is talked about but hasn't shown up yet.
The show has lots of monsters, African mysticism and sweaty heaving heroine breasts. The sets are mostly great and it is shot "on location" in South Africa. For some reason all of the scenes that take place with water, meaning waterfalls or rivers, etc seem to have been shot on location at a Disney-esque water park.
There is a little CGI in this but very, very little, with most of the critters being practical effects and make-up. There's even a giant snake that eats Tarzan that is a practical, full sized prop.
SPFX wiz John Buechler did most of the creatures and effects and a lot of them are quite good. He has a webpage about his tarzan stuff here. Buechler also did all of the practical effects for Jason of Star Command and a lot of movies such as Galaxina, The ReAnimator and the Ghoulie series.
There are some silly quirks to the show, but overall I'm really enjoying it.
