PIRATES WRITING DUO TO REMAKE LONE RANGER.
(Actually I wouldn't consider a new entry into a long running franchise a "remake")
Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, best known for their work on all three PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films, are going to work on Disney's remake of THE LONE RANGER, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
Jerry Bruckheimer will produce the live-action feature film, in association with Entertainment Rights.
RANGER is owned by Classic Media, and began life as a 1930s radio show, its popularity leading to movies, TV shows, comic strips, comic books, toys and novels.
The story begins with the heroic Texas Rangers on the hunt for a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The outlaws ambush the Rangers, killing all but one.
Tonto, the Native American who finds him, nurses the lone survivor back to health. Once healed, the Lone Ranger puts on a mask, teams with Tonto and rides his white stallion Silver to bring the evil gang to justice.
Despite huge popularity in the 1930s through 1950s, in recent years the character has failed at the box office and on TV. A 1981 film, THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER, failed so badly that star Klinton Spilsbury never worked in Hollywood again.
The WB network aired a TV movie/backdoor pilot in 2003 that also bombed.
However dated the Lone Ranger may be, Elliott and Rossio have a proven track record for reviving long-dead franchises, including two ZORRO films for Columbia Pictures and the immensely popular PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN for Disney.
Mike Stenson and Chad Oman for Bruckheimer Films are executive producing and Jason Reed is overseeing for Disney.
