this is a nice Irish movie directed by John Sayles about a young girl, Fiona, who at age 10 is sent to live with her grandparents in Ireland. her family had a tragedy when they lost her baby brother in the sea before the war.
or was he lost?
a very well made movie featuring the legends of selkies, which are seal people (many legends about them). no special effects, except for God creating Ireland (it's beautiful) and people that are well written.

This is indeed a really good movie and a litmas test to see if you are from the pre-MTV short attention span era. It is very entertaining and moving and yet there is no real action to speak of and no jump cuts etc.
It's a film like most of Sayles films, that takes its time to tell a good story. Matewan was just on TV last week and I was reminded of what an incredibly talented filmmaker he is.

i sent this to my mom recently, and then she ended up watching DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE. i'll have to ask her to watch this one and see how she likes it. she'll probably cry.
