i wonder why he hasn't mentioned this to me...
though, since i'll never own one of those colorized DVDs, perhaps that's the reason! at least Arnold won't be telling us how good the colorization looks with 7th Voyage. it would be something to see that on the big screen though.
the bookstore in Santa Monica is really a cool place, full of unique treasures that we all love to read. all worth a visit.

He said he just recently moved to Cali and would be at the show up here. Getting the usual suspects together as well, Jim Aupperle, maybe Justin Kohn, Webster, Butch (Loren) and so on.

One of those great old fashion neighborhood theaters that aren't around anymore, and that you only see in old shows or films. Just recently moved to California? Is this permanent, after nearly 50 years living in England?

not Ray, he means my long time friend Brock (Brock and i are like Harryhausen and Bradbury, if i may lower their standards). what with starting the new job this month, i doubt i'll be running up there so much now, but i'll try to make it at least for something.

Oh, OK. Thanks David for the clarification.
I am tempted to go the Santa Monica event, just to see Ray and "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" on the big screen again. We'll see what happens. (Just showed that movie to my nephew, age 9 and my niece, age 6, and they loved it! See this young generation isn't so bad!) ;D

Wait until they're teenagers. My nephew will no longer watch anything older than he is.

hopefully if you show it to 'em young enough, they will have fond memories of it as they grow up.

I have shown some of Ray's movies, and they've enjoyed them, and hopefully they will have fond memories. My sister actually wants to see "Jason and the Argonauts" with her kids, and being a teacher, she believes this is a nice intro to Greek mythology, which they will eventually have to learn.

Just got back from the Santa Monica event. It was quite interesting!
Ray was there signing autographs as usual at The Ever Picture Tells a Story. Plus, we got a bonus. Special appearance by Kathryn Grant (from 7th Voyage) and Joan Taylor (Earth vs. The Flying Saucers, 20 Million Miles to Earth). I managed to get both of their autographs, and told them how much I appreciated their movies, and both ladies were quite wonderful! It was really great to see them! (Pat Wayne from Eye of the Tiger was also there, but he didn't stay their long, and I believe he only stopped by to see Ray).
It was a sold out crowd at the Aero. Of course, it was during the film, that they did the commentary which consisted of Ray, Kathryn Grant, Phil Tippet, Ken Ralston (in place of Dennis Muran, who could not attend because of a bad cold), Steven Smith and Arnold Kunert. Like with any other commentary, you want to hear what info a person has, other times, you just want to see the movie, but they brought up things I did not know before, or did not notice, like that second Cyclops (battling the dragon) having two horns instead of one, or that Richard Eyer, who played the genie did not meet Ray Harryhausen until just last year!

Oh man, I wish I could've been there! Well I will be seeing Ray, Tippett and company this wednesday when they make it up here. But the live commentary must've been really neat.

i lean toward having them speak before and after the movie, instead of during it. if i want a DVD experience, i'll watch the DVD for commentary, not go to the movies. what's the worst thing someone can do while watching a movie? talk through it! granted, this is a bit different but still!

In the end, I also would probably prefer the talking sessions before or after the movie, but seeing as this was an experiment (which they had done the day before with “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” with Tobe Hopper on hand to provide commentary), it was a curiosity for me, and I am open to something different. Fans were allowed to ask questions during the movie, and this couple sitting right in front of me, asked if the sound in the movie could be turned up and do less talking, but of course, that was not the point of this presentation. Eventually, the couple walked out! Arnold Kunert did mention that they are hoping to release a 50th anniversary DVD addition of Sinbad, with new features and commentary. In meeting Joan and Kathryn (Kathryn’s daughter Mary Crosby from “Dallas” fame was also on hand), my list of meeting Harryhausen leading ladies continues to grow! Terry Moore, Caroline Munro, and now Joan and Kathryn! Of course, the crown jewel is Raquel, but I doubt I will ever see her live.

This was a particularly good show at the Rafael. What made it different was that it wasn't the standard watch a movie then get newbie fanboy questions that we've heard Ray do his very rehearsed soundbite thing to time and again.
We had Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett, Craig Barron and of course Arnold Kunart on stage with Ray through the whole show. A favorite scene of a particular Ray movie was shown and then whoever had picked that scene would ask several questions about it's production. Then a freeforall conversation would spawn from that.
The clips were Mighty Joe Young turning over the lion cage in the jungle, the first appearance of the cyclops in 7th Voyage, the skeleton battle from 7th again, the Kali fight from Golden Voyage. And as a special treat we were shown some rare BBC documentary footage from the 70s with Ray showing how the Dynamation process worked for the Kali sequence.
As a truly special bonus, some "previously never seen before" footage was unearthed from Beast From 20,000 Fathoms which had several seconds of extra Rhedosaurus footage that was edited out from either the beginning or end of several scenes. For instance after it knocks down the lighthouse, there are a few seconds of the Rhedosaurus wandering off and then swimming back out to sea. There's also a few extra seconds at the end of the attack on the fishing boat and couple of the street rampage scenes. They did not indicate if that footage would be attached to a new DVD of Beast.
I tried to ask about the WAR EAGLES stuff but try as I might, Arnold would not pick me during the audience Q&A. Outside of that bit of comedy it was a great and unique show!
It was fun to catch up with several of the usual suspects there.

that sounds like a really good show, and a very good idea to do. too bad you didn't get to ask about WAR EAGLES.

I did talk to at least one person more "in the know" than the rest of the public and the possibility of there being a movie is somewhere between "not likely" and "none". Which seeing who would conceivably produce it, it's probably better that way.
Definitely looking forward to Conover's book THE EPIC DREAM THAT WOULDN'T DIE: The Story Behind WAR EAGLES which tracks all of O'Bies work on the project. It will supposedly come out as a companion piece to Macek's novelization.
