Picked up a few DVDs recently at dirt cheap prices. Getta loada these: 1. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL - Got this for $8.88 at Walmart. The great, classic film has been beautifully restored and the DVD includes lots of bonus material. Never saw the film look and sound this good. 2. While browsing at BestBuy, came across a "Horror Classics" box set of 8 films for just $5.99. Released through a company called Platinum, the set includes 2 DVDs with 4 movies on each. Oddly, they were also selling the same 2 DVDs separately at $5.99 each, so the boxed set was like a 2-for-1. Titles on Disk One:SHE DEMONS BRIDE OF THE GORILLA THE SOUND OF HORROR ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHESTitles on Disk Two:MONSTROSITY BLACK DRAGONS THE DEVIL'S PARTNER NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEASTThe picture and audio quality vary from the couple I've viewed, but they’re definitely watchable. 3. And the now the fiesta resistance: From internet site, Deep Discount DVD, I purchased a box set released through Treeline Films called “Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack” for $23.08!! What a deal! Look at the list of films included in this set: Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Blue Beard The Corpse Vanishes Night of the Living Dead Doomed to Die The Phantom of the Opera The Indestructible Man The Hunchback of Notre Dame Nosferatu Swamp Women The World Gone Mad The Little Shop of Horrors Tormented The Monster Walks Monster from a Prehistoric Planet The Gorilla A Shriek in the Night Bloodlust The Amazing Mr. X Last Woman on Earth The Bat The House on Haunted Hill The Last Man on Earth Dementia 13 Phantom from 10,000 Leagues Carnival of Souls Atom Age Vampire Creature from the Haunted Sea Nightmare Castle Black Dragons Invisible Ghost One Body Too Many White Zombie Attack of the Giant Leeches The Screaming Skull Beast of Yucca Flats The Terror Revolt of the Zombies The Giant Gila Monster The Fatal Hour Dead Men Walk The Mad Monster Maniac Metropolis The Vampire Bat The Ape The Monster Maker The Killer Shrews The Brain That Wouldn’t Die King of the Zombies Deep Discount DVD is located at www.deepdiscountdvd.com The picture and audio quality also vary from film to film in this set, but some are better than several I already owned. For instance, the print on KING OF THE ZOMBIES is way better than the ALPHA version out there, and audio on THE KILLER SHREWS is clearer than the MADACY release. 50 films for 23 bucks is a deal that can’t be beat, and the box set is only 1 and ½ inches thick for storing purposes. Treeline Films also has other 50 movie packs of Sci-fi and Mystery classics at the same low price. Gotta love it.

I forgot to mention the "Horror Classics 50 Movie Pack" is made up of 12 double sided disks which sit in small sleeves of the box. Makes storing very easy.

It will take a long time to get through this set and this is just a first impression. So far, I've watched 2 full features and previewed several others. As noted before, the quality varies, but that's expected. However, there is one area that Treeline should have done better - compression. It seems to be noticeable only during very fast-moving, action sequences. For instance, at the beginning of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD when Barbara is being chased by the initial ghoul, I noticed the picture clarity decline during the quick, running shots. Freezing and stepping through the frames revealed parts of the picture slightly break into blocks. The result when viewed at the normal speed is a reduction in clarity with those scenes in regard to the rest of the film. It’s a shame they couldn’t have gone the extra technical mile, because many of the prints previewed aren’t bad. Having said this, it’s not as if the picture totally breaks up before your eyes. They’re still viewable and some people may not notice it, but if you’re a stickler on this detail, you might want to think twice about getting this. I still recommend it for the amount of films you receive for the price. The compression issue is somewhat minor in relation to the set’s total worth.

Here are some more bargain prices: www.horrormovies.com/On the storefront page above they have a list of bargain DVDs right under the new releases, a bunch of which are only $0.99, and many in the $2-$6 range. They also have some package deals involving those "50 Classics" & Brentwood sets, offering 70 movies for $40 and other similar packages. They're a good company, I've ordered from them before. DVD Pacific has all three Carnosaur films in-stock, and they all can be purchased for a total of $10.34 plus shipping: www.dvdpacific.com/search.asp?title=carnosaur&imageField.x=0&imageField.y=0

My local TARGET had a bunch of $1 DVDs. I didn't get any of the comedy, family, mystery, "hunted & haunted" because either I just wasn't interested or I already had the titles. I did pick up four discs:
Classics of the Old West 'Neath the Arizona Skies (John Wayne & George "Gabby" Hayes) Santa Fe Trail (Errol Flynn, Ronald Reagan, Oliva de Havilland & Raymond Massey) Bonus: The Last Round Up cartoon
The Heroes of War A Walk In The Sun (Dana Andrews) Go For Broke! (Van Johnson) Bonus: Yankee Doodle Donkey cartoon
Adventure Theater Captain Kidd (Charles Laughton & Randolph Scott) The Adventures of Long John Silver: "Devil's Stew" (1950s tv series episode) Bonus: Sinbad the Sailor cartoon
Sci-Fi Classics The Giant Gila Monster Creature from the Haunted Sea Bonus: Flash Gordon TV episode

I found a sweet 3 DVD set in the bargain bin at Walmart the other day. It is called Martial Arts Masters and has the following on it: Fist of Fury, Street Fighter, Return of the Streetfighter, Sister Streetfighter, The Real Bruce Lee, Bruce Lee the man, the myth, Bruce Lee Bio, Sonny Chiba Bio, Shogun's Ninja, Ninja Wars, Rage of the Masters, and the History of Martial Arts. Not bad for $5.50.

BUBBAHOTEP collectors edition DVD is at Target for $10. The extras are pretty nice; a overall making of and then two shorts about making the mummy costume and one about making Elvis. Apparently there's just one company who has done in the past, does now and will do in the future, the sequened outfits that Elvis wore and it's the same company that supplied jumpsuits for Bruce Campbell.
