Can't believe I forgot this one, since it had a 70-71 release. Very ambitious for a bunch of teenagers and a 16mm camera. Has anyone else seen both versions of the movie? The Muren version and the Harris one?

I've seen the Harris one. Pretty good, if a tad disjointed.

There were two versions? Wow, I didn't know that. What's the difference?

Well, for one thing, the park ranger Asmodeus isn't in the original version at all. It's about 15 minutes shorter, I think, and there are some effects shots that were taken out. The original musical score was taken out as well.

I've seen bits and pieces through the years, but have never caught it in its entirety. Someday.

I saw on the EZ Criterion board it had been a rumored release, but have heard nothing from Criterion.

If the structure of the movie seems a trifle odd, it's because the ranger guy (as David indicated) and also the reporter were added in to the movie for the theatrical release. The student film was filmed some time earlier and was used as an extended flashback sequence.
We still haven't mentioned Fritz Leiber, Frank Bonner, or Ed Begley Jr., so I will now.

I had one of those 3 minute b&w 8 mm films of Equinox. It only had one of the stop-motion sequences in it. Boo!
Oh well, it was cool anyway. I finally saw the full movie when I was the movie programmer for a sci fi convention. Some of the movies I ordered were Equinox, The Lost World 1925 and Rod Flash Conquers Infinity ( a short film featured in Cinemagic which happened to be in the list of films I could order... so I did!).

What I seem to recall from when I saw the student film version was that it contained more effects shots overall and more creatures, scenes in hell and so on; albeit these were simpler-looking with quicker-built puppets. The feature version had fewer effects scenes and creatures but these were nicer-looking overall. I thought both versions had their good points, and would like to see both on a DVD.
I also remember the student version had a funny music cue (akin to striptease music) when the "new girl" is introduced near the beginning. The cue seems to represent the menfolk's pleased astonishment at this new addition to their picnic group.

So many stories about the movie(s). I agree with your statements, Amph. Perhaps someday we will see a DVD of the movies.

On ebay I just bought a DVD with *both* versions on it. No idea of the quality or original source.

That's easy: THE BOOGENS!
Or: NEON MANIACS!
But preferably: BOTH!
Eighties much?

The Muren version and the Harris one? Not sure which version I saw, but it was the AMC version seen a few years back. It is one of the weirdest combinations of Satanic-ish Cults, and giant stop-motion animated monster genres that I've ever witnessed. Disjointed? Absolutely!.....but any film like this one with a young "Herb Tarlek" in it can't be all bad;0). BTW: I thought that David Allen did the stop-motion animation, but I'm not sure. Todd

you saw the regular theatrical version. only a few people even have prints of THE EQUINOX, most notably Dennis Muren who directed it. you can find it on eBay, but i've heard rumors about a real release so you may want to wait a bit.
it's different, but i do think the Harris vesion is superior.
