Remember that film?
It was lacking at best. It lacked the dinosaurs, the girl was smart talking with the ape, and he climbed the World Trade Center. It was modern and down to earth.
Even though it won an Oscar for special effects, and got a box office gross, still I bet you don't like it.

Jim Danforth resigned the Oscars for that film receiving one. i wanted to like it, but it was so disappointing (in many ways, much like gino was) and so dull, i just couldn't like it. nice music, though.

When I saw it on the big screen in 1976 I thought it was great-but I was 5 years old! It's definately a dull worthless film! Once Rick Baker's Kong gets to go on a bit of a rampage in NYC it's decent, especially the train scene, and the musical score is excellent-probably the best thing about the film by far!Oh yeah-Frank Frazetta did produce a couple of fantastic paintings based on the film as well-also much better than the film deserved! But with DeLaurentis' usual genius he didn't use Frazetta's exquisite art for the poster image-he went with that garish and oddly designed image of Kong straddling both Towers. Not a bad painting but Kong's face is very strange and not ape-looking.I always thought he had kind of a Wolfman-like face in that painting!I'm hoping Peter Jackson's new KONG will be more faithful to the vision of Schoedsack,O'Brien.,et al. It's too bad Hammer and Ray Harryhausen never got to make their planned remake in the 60s.I guess Toho had the Kong rights at the time..oops.That actually probably had nothing to do with it I'm sure.

Did you know Peter Jackson waited 3 hours in line to see the 1976 remake when it came out? Anyway, I heard Hammer and Ray Harryhausen was planning to remake it in the 60's but they ended up with ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966). I heard around 1970 or 1971, he was said to remake it. And in the mid 70's Universal pictures was planning to remake King Kong but in the spirit of the original. But Dino Delaurentis ended up remaking it. Universal Pictures wanted Jim Danforth to do the special effects. It was called THE LEGEND OF KING KONG. There are pictures of Kong figting a Triceratops (in place of the T-Rex), and a giant centipede like monster (in place of the Elasmosaurus). Also there is Denham's crew being menaced by and Arsinoitherium (in place of the Stegosaurus) and Denham's party attacked by giant scorpions (in honor of the deleted scene form the original). Peter Falk was said to play Carl Denham and Susan Blaklee was said to play Ann Darrow. Here is all what remains of this film: And here is the concept art Danforth created. Dino asked Jim to animate one sequence but he refused. Any comments or questions?

I was 10 when it came out and I was sorely disappointed. No dinos, no animation I knew about and was looking forward to Rick Bakers effects, and they were good for what they were. In fact they are really good for prosthetics. But just fighting a stuffed toy snake was sad and ridiculous. The giant mechani-Kong at the end was a poor stunt hardly worthy of a William Castle gag. It is one of the few times I thought Jessica Lange looked really hot. I saw it the one time and that was it.

In Neil Pettigrew's SMA Filmography, in the WDRTE section, Danforth goes into some detail about the whole 76 Kong debacle. What a crappy ordeal.
It's great that he stood up for his principles but probably in the long run would have been much better off letting it slide. But it must've been a very emotionally charged ordeal for him personally and something that just couldn't let slide.

It's a shame that such actors as Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin and Jessica Lange starred in this crap. I think there is like, what, six Oscar nominations between them (don't think Grodin every received one)?
Yeah, KONG '76 is dog-sh*t. Like everyone else has stated, the music is nice and some of the special effects are alright, but otherwise.....yeah.
