The Blob (1958)
Steve(n) McQueen - Steve Andrews Aneta Corsaut - Jane Martin Earl Rowe - Lt. Dave Olin Howlin - Old man Steven Chase - Dr. T. Hallen John Benson - Sgt. Jim Bert George Karas - Officer Ritchie Lee Payton - Kate, the nurse Elbert Smith - Henry Martin Hugh Graham - Mr. Andrews Vince Barbi - George (cafe owner) Audrey Metcalf - Elizabeth Martin Elinor Hammer - Mrs. Porter
Beware of the blob, it creeps And leaps and glides and slides Across the floor Right through the door And all around the wall A splotch, a blotch Be careful of the blob -- "The Blob" written by Burt Bacharach & Mack David vocals by "The Five Blobs" (really just Bernie Knee recording multiple tracks)
A meteor lands just outside a small town, releasing a substance which consumes anything living it touches, becoming larger as it does so.
Not a bad "B" picture, although the opening theme is better than the film itself.
For me the hardest thing wasn't pretending I believe in man eating blobs from space, but trying to imagine that 28 year old Steve McQueen was actually a teenager.
sequel: "Beware! The Blob" (1972) remake: "The Blob" (1988) planed remake: "The Blob" (2005)

it made a HUGE amount of money, for nearly 40 years in the theaters. the DVD is really well done, and the commentary is very interesting as wel. Jack Harris is quite an unique individual. i've always had some weird thing about blobs that eat people. i mean, it could happen!

I recommend "The Blob" very highly to anyone who hasn't seen it. It's a great film, well acted, well scripted, well directed, well special-effected.
Here's to Irvin Yeaworth, whom we lost about a year ago. One of the good ones!

Ah, I liked the sequel, too...albeit for different reasons (because it was a GROOOOVY 70's film!).

I never saw the 1958 version. But I did see the 1988 version. The '88 version is bad. I heard the '58 version is good.
A 2005 remake?! Please let it be in the spirit of the 1958 version.
I heard there is going to be a remake of SUSPIRIA, THE FLY, 2000 MANIACS (as 2001 MANIACS), WILLY WONKA AND THE CHACOLATE FACTORY (as CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY), WAR OF THE WORLDS and KING KONG.

the remake had a moment or two, i'd say, but the original is far more fun.
it seems all Hollywood is remake crazy, since apparently "expensive effects = good movie" is the thought these days. it sure would be nice to see a movie with effects ONLY when needed, as opposed to them in every effing scene.

Yeah...when I re-watched the original film about two years ago, I was just struck by how solid the thing was. I think of it as something more than a horror film. It was cheap, but the characters seemed so real and so likeable. You know? I mean, those kids were all juvenile delinquents, they caused problems for the town, but they really wanted to help in the end. There's real character depth there, and it makes you feel something. And there's that "intergenerational bonding scene" with the principal of the school smashing the window to get the fire extinguishers. Only a really crazy attitude will destroy that monster! Let's all go wild and kill the monster!!!!!!!
Characters in horror movies today act like cynical brats, and it annoys me.
If they made movies the old-fashioned way, movies would be a lot better. Yeah.
