The Giant Spider Invasion (1975) aka Invasion of the Giant Spiders
Steve Brodie - Dr. J.R. Vance Barbara Hale - Dr. Jenny Langer Alan Hale Jr. - Sheriff Jeff Jones Robert Easton - Dan Kester Leslie Parrish - Ev Kester Christiane Schmidtmer - Helga Kevin Brodie - Dave Perkins Tain Bodkin - Preacher Bill Williams - Dutch Diane Lee Hart - Terry Paul Bentzen - Billy Kester J. Stewart Taylor - Deputy William W. Gillett Jr. - Paul Rider
Miss Dela Street is attacked by a giant spider and the Skipper (without his little buddy) comes to her rescue.
Okay so Barbara Hale's an astronomer in this and Alan Hale Jr is a sheriff. The way I described it is actually better than what happens in the film. Does one giant spider constitute an invasion?
A black hole crashes into a small town farm. After which "eggs" appear which hatch releasing spiders. One spider grows to monsterous proportions. I thought black holes were supposed to suck planets into them not crash into planets.
There is one brief scene of a topless female. Doesn't help the film.
After Invasion from Inner Earth I figured anything had to be better. This film from the same producer/director and same writer is better, but not by much. At least it has some recognisable actors in it.
I have The Giant Spider Invasion in a two DVD set titled "Invasion of Terror" along with The Black Room (1984), Invasion from Inner Earth (1974) and How Awful About Allan (1970). Beginning to look like How Awful About Allan may be the best film in this set.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but when i saw this movie at the drive-in with GODZILLA VS MEGALON in 1976 when i was 5 years old, it terrified me! Of course seeing it years later it induced laughter rather than fear! I love the wacky Volkswagen beetle turned spider at the end! That's got to be one of the greatest cheesy monsters in film history right up with the carpet monster of THE CRAWLING TERROR!

The MST3K episode of Giant Spider Invasion is one of the best in the series. Boy, director Bill Rebane was certainly full of that loveable Ed Wood ineptness. Rebane was also resposible for such cinematic masterpieces as Monster A Go-Go, Rana: The Legend of Shadow Lake, and The Alpha Incident (which may be the most sleep-enducing film ever made).
One funny note is that Robert Easton, who played the back brace-wearing Dan Kester in the film, also co-wrote the script. He's also a Hollywood vocal coach and, believe it or not, was a child panelist on the old TV/Radio series Quiz Kids, which featured children with exceptional IQs answering questions sent in by listeners. ;D

i did think this was a funny movie. the write up in FM made it sound terrifying, as did the pretty cool poster.
alas, it is NOT!
on a slightly related note, anyone see that there's a double disc set of THE DEADLY CARGO being released?

RedKing, I also saw this at a drive-in in 1976, but it wasn't on a double bill with MEGALON unfortunately.
GIANT SPIDER gave us a lot of laughs at the drive-in as I remember. We loved hearing Skipper use the term little buddy early on. And I agree on that Volkswagen beetle/spider, Red. What a riot! I still have fun with this film and watch it every once in a while (shows where my taste is at, eh? ;D)

I need to get a disc of this movie. I lost my taped of TV VHS awhile ago and I've been wanting to watch it again. I still chuckle at how frightened I was of this movie as a little kid! I actually hid under the dashboard when the VW Spider showed up!
