Well, I finally watched this movie. It's a wacky little film with some really cool CGI-fu soccer scenes. It's my first Stephen Chow film. I heard his newest movie, "Kung Fu Hustle", is highly entertaining. So I'm looking forward to seeing that when it comes out stateside.
I think Yuen Biao made a kung fu soccer movie in the 1980s called "The Champions." Did anyone here ever here of it?

i've not seen Yuen Biao's soccer movie. this one is entertaining, but pretty overrated by some fans. since it was a comedy, the cg wasn't awful, but when you think of the same sort of stuff that Jackie et al used to do sans computers, well, it's a been there seen that sort of thing to me. i hear "our" version is shorter, which is probably a good thing.

It runs 23 minutes shorter. The Miramax DVD has both versions on it. I do think it's overrated, although I'm not able to compare this film with Chow's other films simply because I've never seen any of his other films. It comes across as "soccer meets the Matrix and Dragonball Z."
I heard the soccer scenes in Yuen Biao's film were choreographed by the Yuen clan (Woo-Ping, Cheung-Yan, and Shun-Yi). It'd be neat to get a hold of that one to see how it is.

I thought SHAOLIN SOCCER was quite funny but nothing really special. The boys loved it,especially at the end when the Evil team's goalie's clothes all get blown off and you can see his butt hanging out-we all laughed pretty hard at that! But still, like you said David, definately a been there, seen that feel to it.

I liked this one quite a bit,&indeed the cartoony CGI didn't feel out of place considering the film's tone.Chow's ''THE FLIRTING SCHOLAR'' was another good one(featuring Cheng PeiPei,Gordon Liu ChiaHui,Leung ''Beardy'' KarYan&the lovely Gong Li),&I look forward to ''KUNG FU HUSTLE'';I'd like to see ''GOD OF COOKERY''(co-starring Yuen Biao)as well...
Yat dan,yee lik,sam gung fu!
