Just rented this from Netflix after watching a VHS of the baddly subbed HK dvd-what a great movie! Hilarious,action-packed and dramatic all in one film plus it had a good mystery and a twist ending I didn't see coming(which is unusual for me!). The US disc from TaiSeng has both dubbed and subbed(the dubbing is quite good),music only and commentary tracks(!)plus trailers and a making of segment.Very cool indeed. This reminded me why I love HK films as I haven't seen many recent HK flicks lately that i thought were very good.

It's set in Ming dynasty times but features some incongruous things like John Lennon type shades and James Bond style gadgets for the Imperial agents. Directed by Andrew Lau and starring Andy Lau and a bunch of new comers from HK TV but they are all very good, especially the guy that plays Imperial agent Dragon 9.The basic story has the 2 greatest swordsmen in China set up a duel on top of the Forbidden city, but that is really what hitchcock would call a McGuffin-the duel is just a device to get the actual plot in motion.Imperial Agent Dragon 9 is best friends with one of the swordsmen and when certain people involved in imoperial court polotics start turning up murdered it looks like it is his friend that is doing it.There's also subplots with the emperor's sister who is a bratty princess(she's always bugging dragon 9) and Dragon 9 gets elected to give out 9 gold medals that will be the only tickets to get in to see this duel which of course everyone in China wants to see,so he gets hounded everywhere he goes, plus we get to see both swordsmen in action and there is the titular duel which is spectacular!Man,I love swordplay movies!!Dragon 9 is a great character,I really wish he had sparked a series,he wears the Lennon shades and has dreadlock-looking hair, very funny, yet a very good fighter too. It's a great movie!
